It still annoys me.
There was no other way for Sophie Ellis-Bextor to win that sparkly trophy.
Well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles…
Another one.
“I didn’t have X on my Bingo card today.”
Stop it. I can’t even imagine that being funny the first time it was said.
One expression I am sick of hearing too much…
“You are under arrest”…
“If I’m honest. . .”, which is a Britishism that has crept into American usage. My son, who is married to an English woman, uses it. To me it implies “I’m normally a shameless liar, but in this case I’ll make an exception.”
Obviously this is too simplistic.
For example, in the construction “obviously X but Y” you’re just making clear that you are not disputing X while making the additional observation Y.
I hear you.
I want to reply with something like “that wasn’t a hearing test”.
This.
We need for this usage to change. But not just a regular change, no: a sea change
(But will the writer insist that won’t happen on his watch? I can’t say. It’s not in my wheelhouse).
I prefer that to “I feel you”.
These days I think many simply say “heard.”
mmm
I am here for it.
fuckin’
way too overused … especially when somebody from the artistic world is using it in an interview… (using it more than once is huge turnoff for me) …
the guy who played bass for Pink Floyd does this a lot
Comes from 1620 and Don Quixote. Long before The rise of American black slavery and even longer before we started using “Black” rather than “negro”. And anything from Cervantes is just gold IMHO.
Exactly.
I’m sticking with “everything is about racism”.
When it comes to old sayings loosely translated from other tongues, I’m not an Originalist. Whatever it might have meant in 1620 is irrelevant.
Because America.
Oh and “Because (thing)” - another bad one.
Yes. If I work for 90 minutes, I get X dollars in my bank account that I can use for other things. If I read an interesting book for that time, I can call on those ideas in the future. If I hang out with friends, I have good memories of that time. But if those 90 minutes are shitty enough, I want to forget about them forever, as if they never happened at all. I’ll never get any value from them, ever.
It’s good that you intend to stay in your lane.
Everything that happened during the Cold War happened At The Height Of The Cold War.
Everyone who has cancer is in a war. They always lose their “battle with cancer”.
They always lose their “battle with cancer”.
But inevitably that battle was, if not heroic then at least courageous.
