If you look at what he said as a stand-alone statement, devoid of all situational context, …….yes, he’s right.
But the issue is there is absolutely no evidence that Letitia James committed fraud in any way, shape or form. The document that referenced the home as a primary residence was a document exchanged between the title company and the mortgage company and it wasn’t something James signed or even saw. And although I’ve heard it referred to as a “mistake”, I’m not even sure about that. The home was going to be used as a primary residence for the other borrower on the loan (as oppposed to a second home) -James was co-signing for her niece, and she made the fact that she wasn’t going to be occupying the home explicitly clear to her mortgage broker in several written documents.
So this is really more like Trump getting up on national TV tomorrow and saying “ Philly Guy from the SDMB might be a child predator, or he might not be a child predator. In the interest of justice we need to get to the bottom of this issue.” I really don’t think you’d be praising Trump for his evenhandedness if he did this.
And I promise you that when James is cleared, Trump and the RW media will never mention it.
There is a grain of “maybe this isn’t a bad idea” in some of Trump’s proclamations, but it’s always completely negated by the execution. The HB-1 visa system is in need of reform, and I’d probably be in favor of increasing the costs to the employer as part of the reform. I would support a congressional committee to research the best way to reform the system and to craft some legislation that took unintended consequences into account.
But Trump just issued an unclear directive that brought forth more questions than it answered, and the end result is employers are confused and paralyzed and clueless……same situation as the tariffs.
This isn’t about making new rules, it’s about creating an environment where the no one knows what the rules are at any given minute……which creates a perfect set- up if your intention is to prosecute your enemies while you let your friends do whatever they want.
