I am convinced there are a lot of MAGA voters who don’t really know what they want. My MAGA mother was decrying the state of education in Arkansas, complaining there wasn’t enough drive among the population to invest in educating their children. I asked her how she reconciles her support for a man hellbent on dismantling the Department of Education with her belief in supporting education and she shrugged.
A lot of voters are all about the vibes. They care about his a politician makes them feel not what they actually do.

They made a pretty big story out of the decoy flight on NBC News last night, and made it very clear who was and who was not on the decoy flight. Kegsbreath, for some reason, got to go with trump. My wife and I were also wondering “is this the thing that finally turns the remains of his cult against him?”

Based on one interpretation of Hong’s surprising-to-many narrow loss to Crowley in yesterday’s Wisconsin governor primary, one thing many voters really care about is Thanksgiving.
Even though no governor could actually do much to change this holiday – and it’s very, very unlikely that, were Hong elected, she would even try to do so, based on one social media post – it seems even hinting at messing with Thanksgiving is a trigger for some voters.
(I realize it’s likely not much about Thanksgiving per se, but about how this is the sort of thing that triggers fears that someone is “un-American” or “radical,” and *would* implement unsavory policies that actually matter. Also, I’m no big fan of Hong – I’m somewhat relieved she lost. But I thought it fit into this thread.)
I agree: it does fit. Personally I’m more focused on what might (or might not) derail GOP candidates, but Things That Bother DEMOCRATIC Voters is entirely relevant.
Maybe ‘she’ll make us stop celebrating Thanksgiving’ was the thing that cost Hong (very narrowly) the primary win. Or it might have been a closely-related worry: ‘she’s too easy to characterize as a flake, which will give the Republican candidate the Governorship.’
Reports I’ve heard quote New York Times stories (to which I don’t subscribe, so won’t link). Supposedly Rubio, Scott Bessent, and ALSO Stephen Miller and Stephen Cheung were offered up as sacrifices to the (purported) shoulder-fired missiles.
Interviews with any of them would be…of interest.

That’s basically what I was going to say as well. The sorts of people who gave him a pass for the Access Hollywood tape did so largely because that sort of behavior is what they believe that strong, macho men do. They imagine they’re so virile and have such a forceful presence that they’re allowed to get away with it, which makes it ok in their eyes.
But… the flip side is that you also have to be strong and macho when there are legitimate threats. I’m betting they ate up the fist-in-the-air shot after Trump got a piece of his ear shot off; that sort of defiant gesture is what they’re all about.
At best they’re going to spin this as some kind of secret agent/Mission Impossible type plot where Trump outfoxed the assassins, rather than him being cowardly and slinking around.

Snort. I was reading an Atlantic article about the DSA, and the author reported breathlessly (paraphrased), “The left’s views are getting progressively more extreme. Senator X has reiterated their desire to abolish the police and Ms. Hong recently disparaged Thanksgiving.”
I am just baffled why this upset anybody. Liberals have been complaining about Thanksgiving for a long time. It is neither surprising nor shocking that this continues. Also, who the fuck cares?
She has worked as a chef, right? Every chef I know hates holidays with a fiery passion.
The funny thing about the whole changing jet mess is that’s it’s possible that it wasn’t even Trump’s fault. At least according to TV and movies, whenever the Secret Service identifies a threat to the President, it does whatever it can to protect him, whether he wants them to or not. Maybe the Service just shoved Trump into that cart and onto the second plane without even asking him, and it was their plan to leave the first plane as a decoy. If that’s the case, then the only thing Trump is guilty of is following proper procedure for the first time in his life, and if that’s what finally brings him down it’ll be the most hilarious thing in the history of the world.
I’ll assume this is a good-faith question and explain.
First, obviously, “liberals” in general have not been “complaining about Thanksgiving,” a small minority of radicals with disproportionate influence to media amplification have been doing so. Remembering that “woke 1.0” was always a fringe position that normal people hated is important, and failing to do is what leads to things like Francesca Hong.
Second, the normal complaints about Thanksgiving are that it the “traditional story” does not fully reflect the reality of Pilgrim-Indian interaction. Hong’s complaints - that celebrating the holiday is inherently “genocidal,” that it is “anti-woman” in some way, that Thanksgiving was the “original superspreader event” are basically nonsense and I doubt she could or would explain exactly what she meant by them if challenged. She also phrased it in an extremely offputting way (using the idiotic DSA shibboleth “folx”).
Third, even those who have some sort of problem with Thanksgiving rarely call for “abolishing” the holiday.
Fourth, Thanksgiving is a federal holiday and/or voluntary observance by individuals and families who choose to participate in it; it is not something the governor of Wisconsin has any power to “abolish” regardless of the meaning of this idea, so the entire conversation is typical performative left-wing bullshit in which normal voters are alienated by hearing extreme positions that can never be delivered to the fringe base because they are beyond the capacity of the office being sought to do and/or defined in contradictory and meaningless ways.
All of above adds up to crazy bad political instincts - Hong seems legitimately unaware that the average Wisconsin voter is not some shrieking gender studies major, and her version of pandering to those people is to promise an insane thing that she could never do even if she overwhelmingly won the election, turning off the people she actually needed to persuade in the process, and justified with complete gibberish.
You know who else didn’t want to celebrate Thanksgiving? Hitler! If this isn’t enough evidence that Hong is a crypto-Nazi I don’t know what is.

I dunno man. I know a lot of liberals. Most of them still celebrate Thanksgiving, they just feel the need to conspicuously mention that it’s full of whitewashing mythology and skirts over the destruction of native peoples. Or they call it Indigenous People’s Day while changing absolutely nothing about their behavior.
Maybe this is just common among Millennials and younger. But I’ve got my liberal bona-fides.
My personal views are that yeah, our ancestors did fucked up shit to native peoples, but probably this wasn’t one of them, and either way, I’m hungry.
I have never heard anyone identifying as DSA make a lick of sense outside of maybe Bernie Sanders, and I still wouldn’t have voted for him in the primary. Like the Green Party, they want to govern a country that doesn’t exist. There is no political will for this shit even if it were a good idea. I’m gonna be sad when they fuck up the election.

Yep, this has been the case with every news story that people assumed was finally going to make the cult turn on Trump, going all the way back to when he was talking shit about McCain in 2015. And the things that they can’t spin in Trump’s favor, like him being buddies with Epstein, they’ll just ignore.
Also, I can’t imagine Fox, OANN and the other Trumpist mouthpieces are devoting much airtime to this right now anyway.
I also see this. The general result is to avoid decorations and rituals that connect it with the holiday. Similarly, they avoid any red, white, and blue on the Fourth, and just use it as a fun day when fireworks are allowed and people are off work so they can have a barbecue.
It’s not like Thanksgiving even focuses on its (legendary) origin in usual practice, so it doesn’t surprise me if people don’t change anything.
