Things that don't taste like what they are supposed to but are still good.

That subject is a mouthful, I know.
Peanut Butter Captain Crunch doesn’t taste like peanut butter to me but I still like whatever it is that it tastes like.

Oreos don’t taste like chocolate; they taste like Oreos which is delicious and I wish I was eating a handful of them right now (Double stuff!). But still not chocolate to me.

Any other foods like that for you?

Grape Nuts.

Heinz Tomato Soup tastes nothing like tomatoes and nothing like any soup I’ve ever made from tomatoes. But whatever it is that it does taste like, I know I like it.

According to some pizza snobs:

Pizza Hut or Domino’s. Pizza Snobs say that ain’t pizza but I love the stuff.

I was thinking of Totino’s (not Jeno’s) pizzas. Overly-processed foodstuff, but still tasty.

Purple-flavored Kool-Aid. There are no grapes involved - it tastes like purple.

Are you trying to claim it tastes nothing like a real Purplesaurus Rex?!

Tiramisu

Artificial banana and watermelon flavored stuff gets murdered on this forum, but most of it is still good.

I like artificial raspberry, strawberry and watermelon flavors, but can’t stand artificial banana.

Applejacks don’t taste like apples

They based a whole ad campaign on that.

Christ, that was '96 and not last year? I’m getting old. :frowning:

Orange soda & orange juice taste very different. If you drink one expecting the other you’ll probably spit it out.

But they’re both good in their own ways.

Until I made a Concord grape pie a few years back, I too wondered about that purple flavor euphemistically called “grape”.

Well, damned if those Concord grapes don’t smell exactly like grape jelly, grape Kool-aid, etc. By the time I got done with that pie filling, my hands and my entire kitchen smelled like a Welch’s factory had blown up all over the place.

My submission, in that same vein: cherry candy or beverages. I’ve never tasted a cherry that was even remotely like those, and I love fresh cherries, but I love cherry-flavored Life-savers etc.

“Veggie burgers” and similar. There are several that I’ve been coerced into trying because, “they taste just like a burger”. No, they don’t. However, some of them are pretty good in their own right, and if you’d just sell them as “Veggie patties” or something, you’d get a lot more people eating them.
