I’m not fan of Bushito. But the President that Al Qaeda and several hundred thousand dumb voters have given Spain kind of makes me wish I could trade you… would make for a few interesting situations in our Parliament!
Yep, and this place, just like a freshman history class, has a few very bright people, a number of above average people, and a few real dummies.
I agree this is an exemplary board, but saying the SDMB is better than other places on the 'net is like being proud of your kid for being Valedictorian of summer school. Not a very high standard to be held to, is it?
If you run across some of the “post your IQ” threads or other similar garbage, I think you’ll see what we mean about overstated intelligence.
Libertarianism as a feasible government model is grossly overstated.
The members overstate their intelligence and take the slogan “fighting ignorance” far too seriously. We’ve all got our agendas to push, might as well be honest about it.
I think we agree that the board is on average, above average and hardly populated by an elite group of geniuses, but if your reason to complaining about people thinking too highly of the members of this board are threads like “Post your IQ” then I think there are two problems here.
Most people accept that what IQ measures and what translates into useful skills and knowledge are two different things. I qualify for Mensa, but I can barely write a coherent paragraph without several grammar errors and typos. I am improving rapidly as this board forces you to, but I have skated through life as a lazy writer. Despite the fact I have a high IQ, this has not translated into a useful study of advance science, literature, law or politics. I am more of a generalist with some strong skills in specific areas of computing and mythology and the nearly useless baseball trivia. So having a higher IQ does not translate into being a better human, better writer or a great student. It does help with learning when I choose to apply myself.
The other problem with a “Post your IQ” thread is that by its nature it will skew to people whom to take pride in their IQs. I do not believe that you could ever get a good average from such a thread. I do recall seeing one of these, but mostly I see threads reveling in geekdom. I am guilty of happily posting to these.
It might be useful if you could post a few sample of people overstating the intelligence of the board. I have seen many posts about why the SDMB is the best board. I tend to agree with these.
Jim
I’ve never seen that kind of obsession over the trivial details of the series here. People I’ve seen here who dislike the movies dislike major things about it.
It looks like dopers are good at overstating what dopers overstate.
I can’t believe I’m the first to post:
PENIS SIZE
The “Post Your IQ/SAT Scores/When Did You Start To Read” type of threads always seem to dissolve into pissing matches about how early posters starting reading, how many grades they skipped, what sort of advanced things they were reading in First Grade and so on. I usually sit there thinking, “Bullshit…”
One poster will start off saying they were reading 2nd-grade level books at age four, and someone else will say they were reading the same thing, but at age three, and it will be followed by someone who taught themself to read at 18 months.
[Great Pride]I don’t know my IQ and don’t even remember my SAT scores.[/GP]
Crap, now I remember the start to “Read thread”. That one did seem silly to me. Of course, that could be sour grapes. I started as a slow reader and did not catch up until 6th grade. My SATs were high, I use to take a perverse pride in them as I partied the night before and I was a terrible student in High School. It pissed my best friend of to no end that I outscored him. Once again, SATs mean very little. He is a Professor of astrophysics with several published papers and I am a business programmer that still has to do a lot of help desk support.
It does not appear to me that SATs, IQs or Merit Scholars crap means anything by the time you are 30, forget about 40. I have more respect for a 4.0 grade point average as it shows willingness to work and dedication that I never had.
Jim {Chronic Underachiever back in High School and for the record, I read very poorly in 1st grade at age 6}
We also seem to have a statistically larger than average number of D cups. Not that I think we are lying or anything - but maybe cup size is correlated to our incredibly high IQ.
Hmmmm…I’m only a “B” cup. But then again, my penis is quite large. Compensation perhaps.
As a ZZ cup with an IQ of 1037, I’m inclined to believe this is true.
…and now the thread dissipates into in-jokes and attempts at witty humor.
(This is really a response to the OP, really!)
I applaud your War of Ignorance, and may you drink the blood of ignorant men, women and children everywhere…
or something
(double D cup BTW)
I agree.
Oh man, food animals. I gotta tell that one to my cat-loving friends.
That’s just Silo.
Big boobs is the one believable claim. Ever seen dopefest pictures? The average weight around here starts with a 2.
How few cigarettes they smoke. I’ve never met one in real life, but this board is full of people who only smoke three cigarettes a day, then go weeks without one, then back to three or four a day. And no one throws their butts on the ground.
Dopers tend to ask “cite?” far too often…
I’ve never met one of those people either. After a long lifetime of hanging around fellow smokers, you’d think I would have encountered at least one such person, one time or another, sooner or later.
Lets put the high IQ folks to work: If the average IQ in the “Post Your IQ” thread was overstated by 20% (conservative estimate), then, if there is a true correlation, it must follow that the D cup size is overstated by 20%.
What cup size results if D is reduced according to Dangerosa’s Correlation[sup]TM[/sup]?
