I always hear that no one can handle another tipping thread but I haven’t really seen any since I’ve been around that I can remember. This is one of those exhausting topics that has so many “what ifs” and ignites so many people because so many people have been waiters at one point or another. I get really fired up about this topic especially reading a forum for people in the service industry (I don’t know why I just get irritated)
It brings out the worst in people but I would love to get a good tipping thread fired up in the Pit. I have a specific question in mind too…we’ll see.
If a thread mentions anything related to fat people, it’s pretty much inevitable that the thread will devolve into a squabble about whether or not willpower has anything to do with obesity. Nobody’s opinion on this is ever changed, as far as I know.
Those threads where people post puns and one-liners. For instance:
Poster 1: Posts I dunno … a news item about bread or something. Poster 2: I think that would be the yeast of his worries. Poster 3: What a half-baked idea. I would take that with a grain of salt. Poster 4: Everyone, stop loafing around!
The annoying thing is that I can’t tell if a thread is going to be like that until I see the first lame pun, scroll down to the bottom, confirm that yes it’s still going on, then hit the back button. I could have been curing cancer in that time.
Complaints about ‘liberal bias’, although not so much recently.
Threads in which the OP proudly describes how he was, or intends to be, a complete and total knobstick, followed by what appears to be genuine surprise at the critical response.
Any thread on how the board performance sucks, or how it used to be faster, or how Board X doesn’t charge but is much faster, or “where’s my $15 going?”
Rants about moderator decisions. Half of these could probably be handled off the board.
Anything is open to scrutiny, including the venerable SDMB. Incessant whining can get tiresome, but I leave it to the mods to handle that. That’s why they get the big bucks.
Nice town, Austin, by the way.
Oh, sure. (Ironically, I wrote this before the banner ads appeared.) I’ve had plenty of timeouts on the board. But if it’s particularly cranky, I typically walk away… or surf to another site. The conversations are always the same. Anyone who advocates anything less than taking pitchforks and torches to the SDMB admins and mods is accused of sucking off the mods. (I’m pretty sure it’s coming…) Such threads have been the source of many a warning and/or banning.
