Things that infuriate you well beyond their actual importance

I read a book called “Bad Law” where the author is advocated for repeal of all US laws from before 1965. I shouldn’t read books like that though reading any kind of book can be a compulsion for me.

Nah, I think the first Third bank is \frac{1}{3}, the second Third bank is \frac{2}{3}, etc. So the Fifth Third Bank is \frac{5}{3}. Unfortunately 1.666666666666666666666… won’t fit on their sign.

(In reality, the bank was formed from the merger of the Third National Bank and the Fifth National Bank.)

It sounds like a terrible idea until you realize all the ways Trump is using old laws to oppress people right now.

(It’s probably still a bad idea. But that would be one upside.)

I know I watch way too much YouTube because the YouTube guy voice is pissing me off. It’s even in cheap commercials where they could just get somebody to read the copy instead of using the voice. Does anybody not know the voice of which I speak?

Dies Irae.

Yes I understand the reasons behind repealing the laws. I actually share the author’s outrage that the laws have stayed on the books. I know there’s nothing I can do about but the knowledge of the systemic problems definitely makes me a little outraged. Of course that was the author’s purpose in mind.

If you come from full speed to a stop in the middle of the road to allow a person in the incoming lane to turn left in front of you, you should have your license suspended for 30 days. If you do so without even looking in your rear view mirror to see that there are no cars behind you so if you just proceeded at normal speed, the person could make their left more quickly and safely than when you stopped, you should lose it for a year.
If you pull that same trick even though there’s another lane to your right with cars in it that have no idea why you’re stopping and which prevent the oncoming driver from turning left anyway, you should have your car confiscated.

Amen! I hate this, even when it’s done for me. Everybody just follow the rules! Take your turn when it’s your turn! Predictability is a tremendous virtue in traffic.

And don’t stop in a roundabout to let someone in! Cars in the roundabout have the right of way – keep moving!

This drives me nuts too. Especially when I’m waiting to cover three lanes of traffic when I turn. You stopping does not help me because now I can’t see traffic in the other two lanes, and no, I’m not going to blindly go just because you’re waving me through. I already don’t trust your judgement.

Gawd. Following the simple rules of ‘Right of Way’ is critical. Don’t do unexpected shit and we will all get home safe.

I had a neighbor that is the worst driver in the world. She once stopped, in the road on a two lane highway to have her husband get out and clean the windshield. Yes, it was snowing heavily, visibility was horrible. But that makes this situation worse. It was night. I was not happy.

From there on out, when we ever went out to dinner together, I, or my wife drove. This woman scared the shit out of me.

Well, I guess this one is kind of an important infuriation.

I did the same thing with my mother in law. After she missed an exit on the interstate then stopped and backed up, I vowed I was never riding in a car that she was driving ever again.

Yeah, yesterday for the first time in a long time I waved through a car as a pedestrian. I was going to cross an entrance to a big box store when someone on the main road suddenly swerved 2 lanes to enter its turning lane. And then suddenly came to a complete stop when they saw me even though they had plenty of time to turn in front of me.

Oh God. Did we have the same MIL? Mine TOOK an exit, it was the wrong one, so she started to back up the exit ramp it get back on the highway. I took the wheel from the passenger seat and got the car on the shoulder and it was either I or my wife drove from there.

Well… OK. The town I’m from is a ski town. LOTS of crosswalks. And LOTS of lost tourists.

They would step off of the curb into a crosswalk. So I stop my car as I should. But NO they are not sure if they want to cross the road or not. They are just kinda ‘looking around’. They wave my now stopped car through.

Due mostly to luck and a shamelessly obsequious nature when stopped by cops, I only have one moving violation on my record. A pedestrian stepped off the curb, stood thinking and waved me through. The only other person in sight was the cop behind me.

For that I spent a day in traffic school.

Related… pedestrians who are waiting for a light and stand with their toes on the curb. I’m in the right lane, doing 25-30 on a crowded street, howzabout you take a step back? There’s nobody on the sidewalk with you, that extra 2 steps isn’t going to make you late for an appointment, you can even take the steps once you see the traffic slow down for the red light.

You don’t have to be close enough to touch my car while you’re waiting for your turn to go.

Yesterday a kid on a bike zoomed through a pedestrian crosswalk without bothering to wait for cars to stop. He was going so fast he came out of nowhere. He managed to come to a screeching halt about three feet into the road, and not get hit. The cars from each direction were both going the posted speed limit of 40mph.

Like if I see someone waiting to cross, I’ll stop, but there was no time to stop.

I don’t know why some pedestrians endanger themselves like this. But it tears me up that if the worst happened, the driver would get blamed.

I only do this when traffic is stop and go, and someone wants to get in from a parking lots or something. Pausing for a few seconds instead of rushing up those two car length just to stop again is a nice thing.

That’s different, and I agree. I’m very generous with letting cars in—so long as it’s safe.
