Things that infuriate you well beyond their actual importance

Yup. The friction in our lives. The bit of grit in the gears of our day.

there was an interesting article on (i think) macrumors about the chaos behind the scenes of siri.

but it is curious… siri sounds more human so they did a good job there but finding good use for it beyond the most basic of basic tasks is more effort than it’s worth. and for whatever reason she stopped working for me completely for a full week… the phone would wake up as if it was listening to my question and then just… nothing. no response at all. it’s kinda funny if you’re amused by that sort of thing (she is back as of yesterday. i guess she was on PTO!)

When you push one cart (A) into the back of another cart (B), the hinged back of B lifts up to let A inside. I’ve found that when they’re jammed, it’s usually because the back of B has fallen down a little too far and is entangled with A, preventing A from sliding out. Usually you just need to lift up the hinged back of B an inch or so and hold it up while sliding A out.

I occasionally wonder if it would be less likely to happen if B were to be a small fraction narrower, so less likely to jam. I have had success with bouncing the jammed trolleys up and down a bit to jolt them apart.

Perhaps. But when I encounter stuck shopping carts, my impatience kicks into overdrive for some inexplicable reason. I don’t want to study the situation and figure it out. I just want a cart, dammit! :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Things that infuriate me: Sharepoint.

Goddamn horrible software, if you happen to need to modify it to do simple things that the Sharepoint creators never thought about.

And that describes my own response to jammed carts. Surely it’s not a problem requiring integral calculus, but in the heat of the moment, I have no desire to stop and analyze things closely.

But now I am armed with additional information. Next time this happens I’ll try the advice. I’ll report back either way.

Toyota’s automated systems have always been terrible. Don’t get me started on their voice controls…gets started…

I take the commuter rail into Boston 2 days a week. At the station I use, you have to drive past the entrance to the platform to get to the parking lot, and people also drop off their spouses/family members at that spot. Some of them stop and wait at the dropoff spot until it’s closer to the train arrival time. Which means the entire area gets clogged up and you have to thread your way past people stopped on both sides of the aisle to get to the actual parking lot. It’s especially fun when people get out of their car, then keep the door open and lean back in to have a final conversation with the person who they’ve just been in the car with for the past 10 minutes, and likely have been with for the past 12 hours as well. Just pull up, drop off your precious spouse, and drive away. They won’t freeze to death because they have to wait at the platform for an extra 5 minutes.

On that idea- I used to drive to the BART station to go to work. But there were rarely parking places- I was faced with two choices- either get there REALLY early, or after 10, so I could nab an unused “reserved” space. The BART board had petitions to increase the parking, but they shouted it down- “as that would increase vehicle use”. So, how were we supposed to get to BART- walk or cycle 20 miles each way? Morons. Yes, there was a bus- which the “Express” bus took a hour and a half for a 20-30 minute drive. The regular bus took 3 hours or so.

I was reminded of this thread today at Costco. I really really hate the people who wander aimlessly while yakking on their phones. They annoy people like me who make a list and then stick to it. Blocking the aisles while you yap about what Mary did to Joanie is just fucking rude.

You’re complaining that BART doesn’t provide enough parking for a 20 mile radius catchment area? Seriously? Presumably the station you were trying to access was at the end of a line - you lived a LONG way from your job! Did you quit your job or just start driving the whole way?

Is BART more like commuter rail or a subway? Because if it’s more like commuter rail, I can understand expecting parking - but if it’s more like a subway, I wouldn’t expect there to be enough parking for everyone within 20 miles .In fact , in that case, I kind of wonder why there isn’t a commuter rail/bus station where you can park and take the bus/train to BART if you’re coming from 20 miles away.

Yes- San Jose to Oakland.

Commuter rail.

Listening what Mary did to Joanie might be quite an entertaining way to wait for the aisle to clear.
Or you could start shouting advice.

Oh no, is Chachi involved? Did Mary sleep with Chachi?

Sorry… Couldn’t resist.

“Infuriate” probably isn’t the right word, but I am frustrated that there are so many streaming shows shows that I want to watch, and I don’t have enough time to watch all of them. I thought I was starting to get caught up, and then they had to go and drop new seasons of Severance, The White Lotus, Black Mirror, The Last of Us, The Handmaid’s Tale, Hacks, and Doctor Who, not to mention new seasons of Poker Face and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are apparently coming soon. And I want to watch all of them, but I don’t have time in my viewing schedule for them because I’ve only just now gotten around to watching Dark Winds, Game of Thrones, Manifest, Somebody, Somewhere and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I want to finish them before I start watching something else. And I still haven’t gotten around to watching Fallout and Say Nothing, which I’ve been wanting to watch since they came out. So I probably won’t get around to watching any of those more recent shows for months, at which point they’ll be old news.

Honestly, those of you who start or participate in discussion threads about streaming shows as soon as they come out, how do you actually manage to find time to watch them right away?

I’m with you, Wilda. I’m not that guy who can watch more than 2 episodes in an evening, and usually it’s just one. Right now I’ve got Bosch and Reacher and Dark Winds on my next-to-watch list. It never ends!

I may have posted this before, but I hate stupid user interfaces. Skype is getting discontinued now, but something that has always infuriated me is that they don’t let you copy and paste a phone number from email or another app to Skype.

Never mind streamer overload - you should see the back-log on my PVR!
