I don’t have the facts about the Cuban health care system, so I can’t comment. I would not trade the Canadian health care system for the American system under any circumstances.
In fact, I think the American health care system is about the poorest argument in favour of capitalism I can imagine…
I’d also go with CEO salaries, bonuses and golden parachutes. Especially when they make $15 million a year and have layoffs twice a year because “the economy’s bad and we need to trim the fat”. I could live for fifty years on what they make in one. There should be a $10 million a year salary cap. If you can’t manage to live a decent life on that salary you definitely aren’t qualified to manage anything.
There is much more in the same vein, from varied sources such as the U.N. and the Kaiser Foundation. In case you think the Wiki page has been taken over by Castro’s propagandists, I would note that there is also stuff on the page very critical of the Cuban system, but so far as I can see the negatives are almost all really concerned with Cuba’s general poverty and its lack of civil liberties rather than any problems with health care as such.
Of course the system, like all health care systems, it does have problems:
All-in-all, the Cuban healthcare system does appear to be possibly history’s best advertisement for Communism.
Some of the comments here make me tend towards fascism. No, not “the Republican are fascist” non-fascism, but real, Spanish/Italian/German style fascim (bearing in mind that genocide <> fascism). But it would only be fascism for those that want it. Everyone else would be allowed to live as a libertarian.
I’ve alwaysthought that the Soviet anthem was just about the gloomiest, ugly, tuneless piece of crap ever written. Almost as bad as the Japanese one. Now tell me truthfully, do you really think the USSR had a more stirring anthem than this one?
Commie, please. The Internationale is the song of real Bolsheviks, not that turgid piece of nationalist garbage. It even lends itself to numerous treatments, unlike Stalin’s funerary dirge, and can be sung in more than one language.
I replayed it standing to attention with a glass of vodka in my hand. The song brings back happy memories of firm government by much misunderstood tyrants.
A superb rendition of a fine song.
I replayed it standing to attention with a glass of Southern Comfort in my hand.
Does anybody have a tune that goes down well with a glass of Pimms?

Why not just buy your own house? You can get some great deals now. Here’s a chance to show your commitment to your community by putting some of your capital into it. Gets you out of that nasty parent/child relationship with the landlord.
It’s not for everyone at any given time though. Some people are better off renting. Everyone else may be better off with some people renting, too. cough Sub-prime cough
And the OP is in Australia, not America. Our economy is less far around the S bend than yours, thank goodness. There are likely differences in the respective housing markets.
