Things that you have owned but have never bought yourself.

This came up the other day.

The winner was pyjamas. Several of us had been pyjama owners when mummy bought all our clothes but had never bought ourselves a pair after leaving home.

Any other nominations.

Watches.

I always seem to get given one just as I’m about to buy one myself. I just want a watch with a clean, classic design and at most an unobtrusive date display. Masculine but not macho. But no, I always seem to get these awful, chunky things that look like they have come out of a Gillette advertisement, and are covered in yacht race timers, stop watches, and Gawdnose wot all.

Hour hand, minute hand, plain silver or gold rim. That’s all I want.

Long time no see TLD.

My sweat rotted my watch strap a couple of weeks ago and because I never buy good watches I wanted a cheap strap or a cheap replacement watch. I had no idea where my watch had come from but since it only has 3 hands , no functions and no additional displays I figured I had bought it for 20 bucks. Because straps were too expensive I decided to chuck the watch and buy a new one. Luckily I was outside a jeweller who had a window full of Citizen watches just like mine priced from $199 up. I bought a new watch band.

Happy New Year.

I own several umbrellas, all of them found, most on buses. I’ve never bought an umbrella in my life.

I’ve never bought a scarf. I now have two - one that I found a few years back and quite liked, and a stonkin’ new one that my girlfriend got me for Christmas. (She might have been trying to tell me something, I suppose…)

Here’s a question: does anyone ever buy tea towels? Or clothes pegs? These are objects that just seem to be… there. Where do they come from originally?

I’ve never bought a couch. Couches just get handed to me for free, usually very nice ones. This may change soon as the basement couch is no longer in good condition and I haven’t had any couch offers in quite a while.

Pug stuff. Statues, pillows, calendars. I put my foot down on the pug purse. Jeesh!

What are clothes pegs? Are they hangers (the triangle with a hook for looping over a clothes rod in a closet)? If so, I buy them regularly. [Mommy dearest voice]No wire hangers in this house![/Mommy dearest voice] I buy the tubular plastic ones in the supermarket. I can get ten for a buck.

I bet at least two of those are mine. I have to buy a new one almost every year because I keep leaving them on buses, in class, at the movies…

I’ve never bought myself perfume. All perfumes I’ve worn have been gifts. Mostly I’d like the smell of a free sample of a new perfume and I’d tell people, and I’d get a bottle for Christmas or my birthday.

I have owned, but never bought a dog or a cat.

A CD player, a VCR, or a DVD player. A microwave.

Actually I’ve never *owned * a CD player, but both my kids have them.

Slipper socks is all I can come up with.

Another vote for couches. In the 14 years that I have been a homeowner I have had about 5 different couches, all given to me. We just got a “new” one last week when a family member decided to downsize their furnishings. I see this as a very good thing.

Would the one my “friend” found with a baggie filled with bills and some white powder inside of it be yours?

Watches and pajamas, yes. Also slippers; I’ve owned several pairs of slippers over the years, but they’ve all been gifts. They tend to last a long time, at least for me, so about the time I need a new pair–bamf!–someone gives them to me.

Just lucky, I guess.

I *think *clothes pegs are clothes pins. My parents lived in England, but it was before I was born so my English-to-English translation might be a bit off.
:stuck_out_tongue:

Bathrobes. No idea why, but bathrobes.

I’ve owned but never bought a television set. Mom gave me her old one when I moved out, and just when I was resigned to buying a new one because it wasn’t compatible with any cable system, Grandma gave me a new one as a wedding present. I have to say me, not us, because my husband is very proud of the fact that not only has he never bought a TV, he’s never owned one. Under Community property, he owns half of one now, tho’. I’ll have to remember to rub that little factoid in at some appropriate moment.

BAND NAME!!!

Guns - I inherited two and a third is a hand-me-down.

Not likely… I keep my bills and my white powder separate.
