I’ll be on a site visit to Colorado next week. First 2 nights in a town between Colorado Springs and Denver, called Castle Rock. Wed night in Denver.
I imagine I can find something to do in Denver to keep entertained (Are the Rockies in town? I like baseball), but Castle Rock seems pretty small. Is there anything there? Even a halfway decent place to eat and a movie theater beats flipping through channels in the hotel room. A casino would be a bonus.
Please tell me this isn’t one of those towns where the fire is threatening.
My boss lives in Castle Rock, and he eats at Pegasus (313 Jerry Street, Castle Rock) and Castle Cafe (403 Wilcox Avenue). I’ve never eaten there, so I can’t say how good they are, but I always get the receipts from these places, so they must be OK. There is also an outdoor outlet mall right off I-25 that is fun to browse through. I don’t know of any casino nearby, but there are some in the foothills if you are willing to drive out there. I live in Parker, which is fairly close to Castle Rock and would be willing to meet you out for a beer if you are totally bored!
The Rockies are in town on Wednesday night, 7:05 vs. Arizona. I highly recommend going to the game if you enjoy baseball. Have a beer (or three) at Jackson’s Hole across the street from Coors Field before the game so you don’t have to pay $5.00 each inside.
WELL…I’d do some shopping at the Cole Haan outlet in Castle Rock. I was there about a week ago and got some black milan calf shoes with Nike Air insoles - normally $215 but I paid $30. How can you go wrong??
You could drive up past Denver to Boulder and walk along Pearl Street which is packed with some great stores (Peppercorn!) and restaurants. Estes Park would be okay if you then want to drive through the Rocky Mountain National Park.
You’re safe from the fire.
Other than that, I’m not sure what you’d like to do. There are definitely movie theatres around and Denver isn’t far off.
Thanks for the suggestions, monster and Tiburon. I just may go to the Rockies game on Wed. Are tickets usually available on a walk-up basis before the game, or is this one of those venues that always sells out?
How far away are the “foothills”? I don’t mind driving an hour to find a casino, but seeing that I will be working all day and driving through parts of 4 or 5 counties, I’m not up to driving all over the place in the evenings. That probably lets out Boulder and points north.
Outlet mall, huh? I may give that a look-see although I’m pretty well set for duds. (I’m even wearing Cole Haan shoes right now, but didn’t get quite the deal that you did, Tibs.)
I would be up to a couple of drinks in Castle Rock. I’ll probably be hanging out with company reps Monday (They like to play the Good Host to the person who comes to inspect their operations. At least they’d better if they know what’s good for them! ). So, Tuesday may be better. It’s hard to know because a lot of what I’ll be doing is decided on the fly and depends on how the inspection and stuff is going.
We visited Denver last week. My aunt and uncle live there. I was very impressed with the “downtown” area that has all the shops and restaurants and clubs. It was like being in Chicago except clean, no traffic, little noise (well not like Chicago at all).
It was the last night before we left so we only got to walk thru, but I was very impressed. My wife was disappointed that she didn’t have time to shop.
Tickets for the Rockies game are fairly easy to come by. We usually get our from scalpers off the street. Their prices are pretty reasonable. If you don’t mind sitting in the Rockpile (bleachers), those tickets are $4 and seats are always available day of game.
Castle Rock is slowly being devoured by the Denver Metro area anyway. It’s hardly even on it’s own anymore.
There is a fun sports bar at Park Meadows Mall that’s about a 15 minute drive from Castle Rock. I can’t remember the name of it off the bat as it’s been a while. (Off C-470) There is also a good brewery, the Walnut Brewery. MrCynical, Lexicon and I threw back some beers there before a Broncos game, they also have okay food. The sports bar (been to several times, why can’t I remember the name?) has a varied but good selection of food.
Outside Coors Field there are a ton of good restaurants. So if you aren’t up for a hotdog at the game, you can find many good eats. Also, that area has some good night life.
If you want a good down-home type meal, the B&B Cafe is 'sposed to be good. (In Castle Rock) The old timers and new residents alike meet and greet there.
There’s always more but I haven’t lived up there since 1998 so I tend to forget the different places to go.
