Things to do in Maine?

I’m in the Portland area for the next 4 days with my 10 and 8 year old. We are looking for fun activities, ideally outdoors. Any suggestions very very welcome!

Well, you’ll be within shouting distance of LL Bean’s Flagship Store in Freeport. It’s well worth a visit for outdoorsy types of all ages.

Funtown USA in Saco for amusement park rides and water park activities. Your hotel probably has discount coupons available.

Take the Casco Bay Lines mail boat tour. It goes around all of the inhabited islands in Casco Bay.

Visit the Desert of Maine in Freeport. Campy as hell but kids like it.

Visit Old ORchard Beach, eat greasy almost inedible Pier french fries and gawk at the Canadian tourists.

Bar Harbor is a bit too far, but Boothbay Harbor is certainly reachable. You can go on a whale and puffin watch tour and then go to Cabbage Island for a traditional clambake.

You certainly can’t get more ‘Yankee’ than that.

We took the ferry over to Peaks Island, rented bikes and cycled around the island. Tons of fun.

There’s a company that runs two hour tours on twin masted schooners.

We went to the Desert of Maine today, and as promised the kids loved it! We also went to Victoria House and mom loved it. Tomorrow shopping and Friday out on the water in some way, not sure how yet. Thanks for all the ideas!

Is there a ferry from Portland to Bar Harbor? If so, that might be fun…

Is is a bit far for a day trip (driving) though.
