Things to do in Vegas when you're dead - a holiday MMP

Well, we aren’t exactly dead yet but we did feel like it after we landed back at Gatwick last week! Our holiday got off to a good start as the flight time was brought forward by half an hour so after check-in at Gatwick at 7am, we were all set to get on the plane. It was a relatively unexciting 10hr flight direct from here to Vegas, and we were very glad to get off the plane at the other end. During the flight, we’d been over this rather large bit of ice and snow which freaked out my friend Gill as she’d packed for warm weather and wasn’t expecting to be seeing wintry conditions!

After making our way out of the airport, we found that our holiday co-ordinator had organised limos to take us to our hotel, along with a quantity of champagne to get things off to a good start. We stayed at the Bellagio which was a beautiful hotel and by far the least tacky of the lot! Once we’d checked in and got settled, some of us went out for a walk to stretch our legs after the long flight. We had a wander through Caesar’s Palace and then came back to our hotel for a welcome drinks party with the rest of our tour group as there were 24 of us in total.

On our first full day, we went on a trolley-bus tour around the sights, including the infamous sign. In the afternoon, we did a bit more walking and hotel-visiting, stopping off at the Venetian for a giggle at the fake Gondolas and a ‘river’ that smelled suspiciously of chlorine! In the evening we went back to the Bellagio for dinner and went to see Cirque du Soleil’s “O”.

The next day we headed out to the Grand Canyon for a few days of white-water rafting down the river - the weather was perfect, it was sunny and warm during the day but freezing at night so we were glad to our warm beds! The tour company had motorised rafts so all we had to do was sit in them and admire the breathtaking scenery. We stopped at various locations during the day for short walks and wildlife-spotting. Sadly I didn’t have my camera during that bit of the trip because I was quite sure my natural clumsiness and the presence of so much water would spell disaster!

After the rafting experience, we went back to Vegas for a few more days during which time three of us decided that we ought to see the canyon from the top since we’d already seen it from the bottom. Off we went on a full-day coach trip down some very dusty roads to the west rim where our first stop was the Skywalk - it was a strange and surreal experience, to be standing on several layers of glass over a 4,000ft drop! Most amusing was the whole business of watching other people inching their way around the edge of the bridge clutching the rails, and then finding they’d got to cross the clear glass part to get round the official photographer. I know people have problems with heights, but I was still amused by it all. Gill wasn’t too bad on the bridge although she was grumbling afterwards that she just about coped with it, 'im indoors didn’t like it much at all, and I was practically tap-dancing over it! We stopped to have one official photo taken about a third of the way round, then Gill had one taken of herself on the other side, by which time 'im indoors had said he wanted to get off the bridge so we’d headed round it to the far side when she caught up with us.

Our next stop of the day was at Guano Point where we had lunch, and wandered about on the rocks trying to look down but not look down at the same time! The views were spectacular, especially the view right down to the river at the bottom where we’d been rafting just a few days before.

The rest of the holiday passed far too quickly and was a mixture of wandering in and out of hotels, gambling a bit, drinking plenty of excellent cocktails and seeing more shows. By the time we got home on Wednesday last week, I was ready for a break to get over my break!

The rest of my photos are here but they’re mostly from the day trip to the canyon.

Welcome back! Sounds like it was a fun time.

How can it be Monday already???

Isn’t that infamous sign a lot shorter than you thought it was going to be? I thought so, anyway.

I overheard someone at the Venetian say that it was just like Venice–except for the lack of shit in the canals!

Actually, it was! Several people said they were expecting something bigger and more impressive.

I was last in Venice about 18 months ago and they were doing a fine job of cleaning up the canals. The interior of the Venetian had some Italian-style decorations/architecture but it was nothing like the real Venice. Still, it was a pretty good try!

Yay for Vegas trip!
I’ll read the whole thing tonight
Off to work for me. Tra-la.

BooFae makes it to this side of the pond… My time in Vegas was limited to a 45 minute layover at the airport. I’ve seen the Big Ditch, but only from the air.

I have a helluva story to tell about running on the ambulance, as soon as I write it. I’ll post it later today, kiddies.

I’ve never been to the real Venice myself, but I’ll take your word for it :). I have been to New York, however, and New York, New York seems like being on the set of “Sesame Street” with gambling.

Jake OP there BooFae. I’ve never been to Vegas (maybe one day though gambling ain’t my thing but the shows would be fun) but have been to the Grand Canyon. No pictures or words can adequately describe the “Big Ditch”. Ya just gotta see it.

Ok, guess I’ll prowl around the dope a bit then get busy on some stuff. I’ll be doing some interviewing and some training this week. Sounds like fun don’t it!

I await with much anticipation BBBobbio’s ambulance tale.

Later Y’all!

Nice OP. Beautiful pictures.

I hope to make it to the Grand Canyon someday. Vegas? Meh, I’ll probably go there if I make it that far west, but I wouldn’t make a special trip for it.

You will like this one. I’m starting it now…

Great OP, BooFae! I loved our trip to Vegas. That’s where we got married! We took a day trip to the Hoover Dam, too, but mostly we gambled and watched shows.

We had a blast at the company party! Everybody looked fabulous. The food was excellent - we had chicken roulade and a petite filet mignon. And the dessert bar was to die for! Alas, we didn’t take pictures. We were running late, and completely forgot! :smack: There was a photographer there, so maybe we can get those pictures later.

Lovely to have you back, BooFae!!

:: runs off to class ::

The Skywalk is a loop? I thought it was a straight bridge across.

From last week’s thread: Noone, I did get that review written and sent out across the ether. Today I write a ten-page paper about the IM language of twentysomethings in twelve hours. Possibly less, I’m going out tonight. Dammit. In celebration of this, I’m actually drinking coffee. I’ll be awake for 168 hours straight this week.

Once I’m done with these papers, I’ll be an interesting person again. I hope. Stupid paper-fried brain.

Um… do you realize the width of that ditch?

Hey, coffee is how I keep myself from eating… not that it helps. No, I’m not 20-30 lbs overweight. Uh-uh! No way!! :o

I’m sure you’re “interesting” right now, too. Or at least your life is (In a Chinese sort of way… ) – I doubt you’re ever boring :). And Yay!! for finishing coursework

Great OP boofae! I have never been to the Grand Canyon or Vegas. The closest I ever got was Reno nearly 50 years ago and I was not impressed. I’m glad you had such good weather during your rafting trip. Doesn’t sound like you spent much time in the casinos which designates you as a winner!

We are still basking in mahvelous weather which is supposed to continue right through the week with a slight cool down for the weekend. This Saturday is my neighborhood’s luminaries celebration. It’s loads of fun with carriage rides, hay rides, fire truck rides and all the folks out walking around taking in the the holiday lights.

I have so much shopping still to do. I did go to the maul to pick up some gift cards but that place is seriously skidding off the reality edge. I did not see one sale item that I thought was a deal. :stuck_out_tongue:

BarbeeDoll[sup]TM[/sup] and I decided last night that we were going to have surf and turf for Xmas dinner. We are tahred of the traditional fair and nobody’s going to complain, that’s for sure.

Looking forward to the latest installment of Bobbio–Fearless Fahrman!.

Skimming, working, having a very bleh day for some reason.

There is some excitement at the Kid’s campus today. Pretty scary actually, though at the moment, she is snoozing on our couch. She stayed home to study in peace for a couple finals.

Popping in to say HI and look at boofae’s pictures. I’m around … just a MMP MIA lately.

::kisses::

Welcome back, BooFae! It looks and sounds like it was a wonderful trip. At least there was plenty of fun to be had. But then, it’s Vegas. Boredom isn’t allowed within the city limits.

So, wait – it’s Monday? How did this happen? I turn my back for a second…

Weekend was relatively uneventful. More Christmas shopping done – just a couple more people to buy for, and they’re gift cards anyway. I can’t believe Christmas eve is already just two weeks away. How do the holidays pass by so fast these days? sigh

Okay, time for work.

Morning, all. I’m off to my new job. I hate early Monday mornings!

Great OP! I’ve never been to Vegas or the Grand Canyon. I tried to talk TVMan in to heading out there for a weekend trip once, but it didn’t happen. That’s ok, though, seeing as neither of us are really into gambling.

Just got to work. This is my second time awake this morning. I went to bed early last night because I was freezing. Thus, I woke up at 3 and stayed up until 4:30. The next time I woke up it was 7:45.

Ok, off to surf the net to send Christmas gift suggestions (and following quickly thereafter first anniversary) to TVMan. He can’t really get out to shop without me, so I figured I’d give him an internet wishlist.

Glad you like Zaftique, FCM, items from there will definitely be on my list!

Have a great morning, everyone!
