Things you don't see anymore:

I just bought a large jar for the Holidays. Can’t wait to open it.

If you relish these sorts of overblown recipes, then I highly recommend the Dali Cookbook.

Madame Dali was apparently known for her utterly hedonistic buffets. The Roman Emperors never dreamed of her excesses. An when she wrote up her recipes, her husband illustrated them. It’s amazing stuff.

I can get fresh smelt at my neighborhood fish stores, but I usually rub them with lemon and olive oil and grill them. Again, Greek wife.

Swordfish steak is commonly available, too, but there seems to be an eco-reason not to buy them. Also, not cheap any more.

I made pineapple upside down cake last year. It was really sweet and I probably won’t make it for another 5 years or so.

I have enjoyed jarred herring and cream but I’ve never bought it, only eaten it at friends’ (Norwegian) house.

My husband grew up eating shad roe and his father made it for us once. I think that was the last time my husband ate it. It was interesting, as the entire uterus is pan fried. I believe there is a shad roe festival every year in the area, which is near the Delaware River.

And I grew up with Columbia River smelt, which are currently threatened.

And if I really lost my sanity, I can buy tongue at the local grocery store or butcher.

That is a phrase I’ve never seen before. And never want to see again.

I’m reading a book called Hippie Food (by Jonathan Kauffman), and it talks about how rice cakes were first created and mass produced in the U.S. Rice cakes haven’t crossed my mind in a long time. Back in the nineties, they used to be The Food for people on a diet, but I suppose they weren’t low-carb enough to survive the dietary zeitgeist of the 2000s.

Honestly, the first thing I thought when I saw the thread title was “white dog shit”.

Not really what the OP was going for, I didn’t imagine - and if it was then Café Society probably wasn’t the place for it - but that was where I went.

Rice cakes are still a staple of whole foods stores. They come in various flavors like potato chips, which is good because otherwise they taste like packing material.

They’re pretty common in supermarkets in the UK. Well, in as much as anything is these days. We often have some Marmite flavour ones in, but we always have plain ones. I’ve always really liked them, and my daughter has enjoyed them with mashed sardines since she was still crawling.

You are absolutely right about this. It’s known as “chalky poo” or powdery poo.

In the olden days (when I was a kid) you’d see old dog poop around that had turned white and powdery and it would eventually fall apart or disintegrate. This is good. This is how it should be. Nowadays there are so many preservatives in commercial dog food that the poop never breaks down and disintegrates.

You can learn a lot of shit and a lot about shit at the Dope.

Returning to the regularly scheduled (pronounced sshed-uled for YP’s benefit :)) broadcast.

I was under the impression that it was due to their having traditionally been fed more bones…but either way, it’s not a common sight any more. To be honest, canine leavings of any stripe are a rather rarer sight nowadays.

It’s both, because those bones were raw and without preservatives.

No crackers. I just eat it right out of the jar, especially if it’s got lots of onions.

Manners.

There are still plenty of four-string electric bass guitars, but I’ve seen many more with five strings in the last 15-20 years.

More five-strings than there used to be or more five-strings than four-strings?

Oh I see them in stores, I just never see anyone actually eating them anymore.

Both, it seems to me. When I see an average bass player of an average band, more often than it’s a five-string bass.

Different circles! Absolutely not the case in my experience.
