Things you don't understand the appeal of

Re: dog shows based on prettiness.

I think the logic is that it’s more a contest of the skill of the breeder, rather than of the actual dog. Obviously mongrels are always more interesting, but the Kennel Club and other Pedigree organisations have strict guidelines as to what, say, a Golden Retriever should be - when the dog is looking straight ahead you should see none of the white of the eye, I believe. It can go wrong (some ‘overbred’ dogs have particular difficulties, like Pugs(?) often have breathing problems). I can kind of appreciate this as an art, although to be honest it seems a bit boring and arbitrary at best, and if we’re going to paint pictures with genetics in today’s gradually more enlightened racial atmosphere it might be nice to see a symbolic shake-up in the dog world. They’re already pushing ahead with the Labradoodle (no kidding - Poodle and Labrador cross). And I met an Alsatian/Husky cross puppy the other day that was the cutest thing on four legs. Freakiest crossbreed, anyone? Chihuahua and St Bernard? (hey somebody let me have a link on that… it must have been tried, at least with artificial insemination…)

Re: Carrot-top.

I never really understood folks’ problems with this guy. Admittedly I only saw him once, but he was just this dude who did a lot of sight gags. What’s the problem? Does he get his tackle out when Brits aren’t watching?

Chi-hua-hua’s (thanks, Cheech & Chong) have enough trouble birthing as it is. My daughter has two, and her friend breeds the dogs. Breeders have to be careful, even among the breed, not to breed a sire who’s too large for the bitch.
The whole “pure bred” thing make’s me uneasy.
Pets as an accessory. I dunno. Kinda sucks, IMO.

mangeorge: Softly is music speak for quietly, hence my confusion. There are classical pieces, principally chamber music, in which the entire piece is meant to be played softly, and much chamber music is written for the purpose of being background music, i.e., it’s not necessarily designed for the purpose of having people sit and listen to it.

That said, I agree that if you’re going to play music, it should be played at a volume at which it can be clearly heard and appreciated. I listen to lyrical music most of the time, but there are some situations in which I just want some background music to “set the mood”, and for this purpose symphonic or chamber music, or jazz works well for me.

It’s the texture – tough enough to chew for a while, but not so bad that you’re actually wrestling with it. The rubbery nature and textured side makes it even more interesting as you gnaw away at it. If you cook it with the right flavors and spices, it’s terrific.

Needless to say, my mom makes an awesome tripe. Thanks, mom!

Camping: You work hard all day, day in and day out, to earn money so you can have a nice house, with electricity, indoor plumbing, heat, air conditioning, hot showers, comfy bed, etc. Then, as soon as you get a few days off, you go to live in a tent in the woods! Why???
