What are some things that, as far as you can tell, everyone you know seems to enjoy, but you don’t give a crap about?
A personal example: Tailgate parties. Everyone I see at one seems to be having a good time, but I have zero interest in attending one. Sitting in a parking lot and eating and socializing? Feh.
Television programs. I don’t watch anything with any regularity and never have.
Well, there was a year or two back in 1993 - 1994 when I tried to catch The Simpsons every week, but apart from that I have never followed any TV program at all. Ever.
I don’t enjoy sports as much as most do but I’m willing to watch a game or two in order to spend time with friends. I have never cared at all for the meta-game aspects of sports, though. When a sports fan starts into “If we win and Teams A and B lose their games and Team C wins…” I can’t make myself pay attention.
Football. I liked getting to eat Doritos and guacamole during Superbowl parties as a kid, but that’s the extent of my enjoyment of the sport. I used to play and perform (in marching band) at every football game at my high school, and I never paid attention to the field unless it was our turn to be on it. The vast majority of the game is just a bunch of dudes standing around! I get as much enjoyment from football as I do from watching masked people stand in line. Feh!
Shopping. I don’t even care for grocery shopping, much less clothes and shoes and gift shopping.
The casual-sex-pickup-at-a-college-bar-or-party scene. I liked casual sex as much as the next college student, but I never liked going to a liquor-serving establishment for it. Picking up people among clubs/study groups is better.
Almost exactly this. Although I did follow TV shows when I was young, since the mid-90s I have not tried to follow any TV show except for The Simpsons. Plus there were a few PBS shows that I watched whenever they came on, but they were so infrequent that it wouldn’t really count as “following”.
Plus, now I don’t watch TV at all, what with analog being killed, getting no digital stations over the air, and not wanting to pony up $50+ a month for something I’d barely watch anyway. Thankfully the digital TV I bought can double as a monitor for my second computer/X-box.
Going to the movies. I can barely make it through a movie at home, pausing when I need to do something else, and always multi-tasking. Paying through the nose to sit in a theater with a bunch of strangers and a sticky floor, going deaf when anything on screen goes kaboom, and it’s too dark to read while half-watching? No thanks.
Also, wine. Just don’t care for it. Maybe I could develop a palate, but I have migraines, and the risks seem higher than the potential rewards.
