Things you genuinely like, but don't get what all the fuss is about

Coffee. It’s okay and all, I enjoy it when I have it, but I could take it or leave it.

Dave Matthews.

I really do like fine dining from time to time (high levels of service, specialty menus, recognised chef, etc…), but usually I just eat out when going to a restaurant. The experience of a higher end restaurant is fun, but if I like a place’s food and it has decent service, I’ll be pleased with it even if it is a chain. Sometimes, atmosphere is simply for breathing.

I have family who apparantly think atmosphere trumps all. Dining out with them is an exercise in pretentiousness. You’re not royalty. We can go to Chilis or Outback. And hire a maid to clean your house if you got that much money. The place is dusty.

I don’t do much with them anymore.

Sex.

I was also going to say this. It seems that bacon’s become particularly popular in the last couple of years.

I wish I could remember which comedian it was who had the same gripe about his wife. She liked to dine in restaurants with “ambiance”, and he eventually realized that “ambiance” is the same as “atmosphere” but without any poor people.

This, pretty much. I’m just not enthusiastic about anything. I may not have highs, but it’s worth it not to have lows either.

Food and drink is the biggest one for me. Most people are so into what they eat, it just seems crazy over the top - reminds me of drug addicts. Yes, we all must eat to live and eating good food is certainly a pleasure, but I don’t orgasm in my mouth when I have something I like! And I don’t have ‘cravings’ for certain things and feel intense pleasure when I fulfill them. I’m glad I’m just not built like that, it makes it easy to eat strictly what’s good for my body and makes me feel the best (of course, I also make sure it tastes good to me).

BMW:

I am an auto enthusiast and have driven everything under the sun. Most BMW’s are nice. That’s it: NICE. End of story. The 3 series is nice. For the price, it’s clinging desperately to nice. A few dollars more and it’s not even nice anymore.

NFL:

Seriously? Really? If you like to watch commercials and get a mind-numbing headache from the boob tube by sitting around waiting (and waiting) for something to happen, please watch you some NFL football.

Breaking Bad. I really do love that show, but frankly, if it went off the air mid-season, I think I’d miss it for about 20 minutes.
Dexter, OTOH, is a different story.

I like to cook, but only for myself and my partner. I very rarely follow a recipe, and generally just prepare one dish that’s a combination of whatever I have on-hand (soup, stew, salad, casserole, etc.) . . . and make enough for a few meals. I can get pretty creative with my ingredients, but can’t stand having to measure things or time the addition of each ingredient. I can understand doing that if you work in a restaurant, or are entertaining guests, but for just the two of us I’d rather be more spontaneously creative and not take cooking too seriously.

I second the above about wine and fine dining. I can’t see why anyone would willingly pay $70+ for a bottle, and I’ve stepped away from very expensive dinners with profound regret that I didn’t go to Taco Bell.

Also (and I don’t want this to become a band thread, but hey), The Beatles. I enjoy their music and all, but I cannot see why they’ve historically been in a class by themselves.

Seconded, they’re probably the only band that I both like and think that they’re overrated. They’re barely in my top 10 favorite artists, if that, even though I like most of their middle and late period stuff.

Freaks and Geeks. Saw the whole thing over the last few months and while I enjoyed it and there are a handful of really good bits I have no idea why 10 years on people still speak of it so reverantly.

Fresh Home made ice cream - creamy, sweet, tasty

Store bought ice cream - creamy, sweet, tasty, cheaper, faster

Music by Prince - nice stuff, I enjoy it. Can’t see why he’s got such a big following

Coke/Pepsi Bias - I can’t tell the difference and on those rare occasions when I want a cola, either one will do as well as most off brands

Tim Hortons.

Ditto for Krispy Kreme. Mmmm sugar, but they’re teeny-er than other donuts, and does every flavor really have to be glazed?

I’m glad to see someone else say this too, but somehow whenever I mention that I think it’s overrated, people accuse me or, more often her, of being bad. In fact, quite the contrary. But I just don’t get the idea of “needing to get laid” as anything other than “you’re too stressed out”, and yet I seem to know plenty of people who act like they’ll die if they don’t get it, or talk about it all the time. Either way, I think Twain said it best: “Nothing is so overrated as sex, and so underrated as a good bowel movement.”

As for the bacon thing, I’d agree, except I think the whole point is precisely that it’s overblown. I very rarely see any of the people seemingly obsessing over bacon actually having that obsession.

For my own contribution, high class anything. I’ve gone to expensive restaurants and I genuinely do taste the difference in the meal and the wine, and I enjoy it, but I’m also happy just eating a decent burger or steak. There are times when I think that sort of thing is worth the money, but it usually isn’t. Hell, even if I could afford to eat out at a place like the regularly, I wouldn’t, because there’s a certain enjoyment to a simple meal and if I’m not in a place where I can really taste and appreciate the subtle differences, it’s not worth the time and money to me. And yet, I’ve known more than a few people who obsess about these sorts of things and would do it every time if they could afford it. The same applies to clothes, hotels, first-class flights, etc.

Also, live sports. Yes, they’re often enjoyable, and the energy is great, but there’s always so much involved with them, either dealing with traffic and parking or finding public transportation, and it’s always pretty expensive. Worst yet, you could invest all that time and money just to see your team suck and there’s nothing you can do about it. At least when I got to other live events like concerts I know what I’m in store for.

I don’t know why but I thought they served real coffee. Heck I can get flavored coffee at any gas station.

Ooh, band name!
