This thread is to share things which you truly, honestly like, but don’t understand why others tend to elevate beyond rational levels.
It occurred to me that although I genuinely like red wine, I’ve never, ever swooned when I had a glass. Nor have I ever gotten hints of the flavors that I’m supposed to be tasting.
To me, wine just tastes like wine. I’ve never gotten a whiff of chocolate, oak, raspberry, cherry, or the dozens of other flavor profiles which are supposed to be present in the wine. I just enjoy the “winey” taste of wine, and am content with that fact.
What other things do you like, but don’t understand why others make such a big deal of it?
Pretty much everything. I’ve never understood the over-the-top expression and swooning over something one likes. I like a lot of things, I dislike a lot of things. Things I dislike tend to get more of a rise out of me than things I like. Things I like simply help me get through the day a little easier.
You should try one of the other flavors… like Hickory.
Clementines. I like 'em just fine but a lot of people here seem to go crazy over ‘em. Eve, I’m lookin’ at you.
The Shining. Yes, it was very interesting and different enough to fill an entire niche but no, I didn’t freak over the two little girls or the contents of his manuscript. A good movie but in my mind nowhere near “Oh my God” with bountiful exclamation marks.
Harry Potter books and movies. I like them, but I don’t see why people were standing in line overnight at bookstores to get the newest book. They’re not that great.
President Obama. Seriously. I didn’t buy into the “rockstar” hype he generated during the 2008 campaign, and I didn’t think he would make everything all better forever, like a lot of my fellow Dems seemed to. But I think he’s doing a great job - much better than I expected. I’ll certainly vote for him in '12.
Chocolate. I like it a lot, but all these gourmet brands? Eh. I’ve had them. They’re chocolate. They have some bars at Aldi, some off-brand Venezuelan dark chocolate that tastes just as good.
I guess I’d have to reverse this question to answer it. I love, I mean LOVE the old Australian soap opera Prisoner (Prisoner: Cell Block H). OK I’m probably one of 50 fanatical fans of this show, but I really, love it. I’ve watched it so many times.
I could never explain why I love it so much, I just do.
So I’m sure other people feel this way about wine, or Harry Potter or whatever.
I can see the lines for the books because it’s a kids thing and parents are soaking up the special years where they can share in their kid’s excitement over stuff like reading books. It’s just a matter of time before the little darlings go over to the dark side in their teen years.
I’m not sure how big the movies are but they sold out of the Midnight opening in the Imax in my area (they also filled 7 theaters in advance).
Although at Ocean State Job Lot about 5 years ago they had a few boxes of an absolutely killer sugarless chocolate from Israel that was better than the chocolate bars made with sugar. Can’t remember what they were sweetened with, but it didnt spike my glucometer readings nor did it give me the shits. I would desperately love to find them again =(
The Wire. Definitely. I enjoy it, but were it just up to me to judge on my own, the particular level of worship would not at all have been something I’d have expected.
The Beatles. But I don’t know if there’s even any point having the conversation; surely everyone’s had it before.
Mostly, I guess, things people really, really worship. They tend to be rather good (hence all the fans), but not really worthy of worship (what is?).
Hmmm, not sure this qualifies as a “thing”, however, while I can see that Kate Moss is pretty enough, I just don’t understand why she is so highly rated (and paid).
I have that with many supposedly good-looking people, actually.
