Things you should love, but for some reason you hate

How about peanut butter? It’s kinda OK in a sandwich, but please, not in a cookie or in ice cream. Reese’s Pieces are right out, too.

I don’t follow what you’re saying- are you saying that you like pepper that you buy pre-ground at the grocery, but you don’t like freshly ground pepper? I guess that makes some sense, considering that it isn’t as intense after it’s been ground and sat a while.

I don’t really hate much of anything, but there are two foods and one TV show that by all rational measures, I should love, but I do not.

I don’t like raw onions or tomatoes at all. I can eat them if I have to- neither makes me gag, but I don’t enjoy them. I’m good with cooked ones though.

I pretty much didn’t like Dr. Who after the 9th doctor quit. I probably should- I’m generally a pretty forgiving science-fiction TV watcher, but I just can’t get into it- it just seems… amateurish? silly? cheesy? I can’t put my finger on what it is, but there’s just this wink and a nod thing going with the goofy bad guys and the like that just turns me right off.

The Simpsons. I loved the vignettes at the commercials on the Tracy Ullman Show, but I can’t stand the full show. I looked forward to it when I heard it was coming out, but was very disappointed in it, and have never been able to watch it since.

Modern Family

I watched it for a while. I even taped it. But in fact, I can’t stand the Dunphys. I like Cam and Mitch but I hate the way the writers have turned Lily into a smug little bitch. (I’m sure the actress is a very nice little girl.) Does Gloria REALLY ***have ***to speak with such a strong accent? She’s like a caricature of herself. I like Manny. I’d watch a show with Cam and Mitch as parents to Manny. Now THAT would be a good show!

Big Bang Theory. Sooo many people have told me I should watch it because they assume I’d love it. Not sure what that says about me, but…

I just think it’s so stupid. It was on in the background again a couple days ago, and within 5 minutes of faux-nerdy-intellectual-adolescence I thought “Well, I’ve just watched every.single.episode. of BBT”.

I realize lots of folks like it, though.

Color Run/Glow Run/Bad Prom Run/Neon Run/Gimmick Run. Yes, I like running. Yes, I like doing races here and there. You won’t catch me anywhere near one of these.

Oooh the gimmick run reminds me of another one. I love cycling. I advocate for making cities more bike friendly. The CicLAvia events in Los Angeles are awesome. On the other hand, Critical Mass can suck the skids marks out of my chamois.

Yeah, BBT, too. I’ve tried it several times, and people tell me I will like it because I’m sort of a geeky-nerd-reader. But it’s just dumb.

I don’t hate The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but I don’t think it’s an especially good book.

Kurt Vonnegut, on the other hand, I hate.

Stargate SG1- Love Sci-Fi, Loved the movie, loved MacGyver. Should be a no brainer. Can’t stand it.

Great idea for a thread! Fun. Two of mine have already been said:

I have so many friends who love those shows, and they just don’t do it for me. Another one is Mad Men. I have tried watching the pilot several times and find it just so very dull. Yet if you list the other most highly acclaimed TV shows of recent years, I’m totally down with pretty much all the others: *Breaking Bad, The Wire *(although that one did take a couple restarts), The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Office (UK), Extras, The Americans, Rectify, The Shield, Top of the Lake, Enlightened, Girls, Party Down, Boardwalk Empire. Love 'em all. (I guess my other major dissent is with Homeland, but I think many fans of that show have slowly come to admit that it’s a bit on the ridiculous side.)

Music: Ike Reilly, The Mountain Goats, and The National come to mind…

Cinema: Raging Bull, Zero Dark Thirty, Slumdog Millionaire, Watchmen, Burn After Reading, Dead Poets Society, As Good as It Gets, Lord of the Rings, The World’s End, Casablanca, There Will Be Blood, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, A Christmas Story, Clerks, Django Unchained, MASH, Oldboy, Harold and Maude, V for Vendetta, The Princess Bride, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Inception, Jarhead, Into the Wild, Anchorman, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Artist, Topsy-Turvy, *and the Christopher Nolan *Batman *movies.

You understand! It’s that pretentiousness that I can’t stand, the ridiculous grandeur. That, and the rape-rape-rapey-rape-rape-happy-rapey-fun-times. Absolute drivel.

People also always tell me that I’ll love The Killers. Why? Why would like such infernal noise? But I think I must have a sign on my forehead saying “I am a person who should love The Killers”.

Mine is the Starz TV series “Spartacus.” I should LOVE it. Set in ancient Rome, full of violence and sex, lots of naked slave girls running around and having sex, plenty of plotting and scheming, I should LOVE the show. But. I. Didn’t. I think it was because the tone is too grim and dark, the violence too visually gloated-upon. Way too much slow-motion blood spurting, it was like porny blood money shots. Yech. The same show with a much lighter tone, I think I would have loved it. But somehow, a show about slaves who must fight to the death in the arena doesn’t lend itself to comedy.

Chelsea Handler’s show. Reasonably attractive woman making fun of celebrities: I should love it.

MMA, I am the target demo, but it’s never appealed to me. Seems like assault with a ref present.
