RACOON? If I’ve ever seen that, I just assumed it was an error, whether of typography or ignorance. Never knew it was an acceptable variant, but if I were editing copy and it came up, I’d still change the spelling unless it was a direct quote from written material. Even then, I’d be tempted to add a footnote or a [sic] so that a reader didn’t think I’d let a mistake slip by.
There’s only a D in pigeon if you’re talking about Walter Pidgeon :).
Wigeon (a type of duck) is usually spelled with a D, but if we allow that and racoon you have a five-fer, at least!
I guess the 60’s was three-fer cuz I was not thinking of Miller Barber. The guy I was thinking about had a much more impressive resume than Barber. FTR, i always enjoyed watching Barber play golf. his swing had more moves than ex-lax.
