Hi.
I have been looking at getting a newer computer.
I don’t need the fastes on the market, just thinking about upgrading to something cheap and faster than the 486 I have.
This seems like a good deal.
What do you guys think/
Not a bad deal at all. Although it comes without monitor, but I suppose you noticed that already. I would recommend doubling the memory though: I have a comparable PIII 550, also with 64 MB. Sumbitch is rattling all the time, which indicates that is is using the virtual memory on the HD (I think! Any techies that know what my computer is REALLY doing, drop a line ;)). 128 MB’s should fix it, and make that Compaq you’re looking at quicker as well.
At first glance it looks like a good deal. I’ve been running an AMD chip (K6-II 400) for quite some time and it’s worked just fine.
The only thing to watch out for is to make SURE that you don’t have to sign an aggrement to shell out 30 bucks a month for compuspend or some other online service.
I’m sure that is what all the rattling is. I don’t know WHAT windoze is doing, but my internet machine has to hit the swap file to open a window! And it had 50 mg ram.
Looks like a great deal. It IS a refurbished (rebuilt) pc, but you still get the 1-yr warranty so you should be ok there. Compaq’s (IMHO) are pretty reliable.
Coldfire: You are most likely right about the “rattle” being your pc writing to Virtual Mem. Especially if it happens just as you launch an app. or perform a memory heavy function (I know, DUH!).
Thanks for the advice fellas. I just ordered it.
I was happy with my last computer, it was also a refursbished Compaq, that one didn’t even have a warranty, so I look forward to this new one. I am somewhat anxious, since it was such a spur of the moment thing. Hopefully I won’t grow to regret the purchase.
