This Board's anti-criticism policy is harmful and misguided

Until recently, there was an active thread entitled “Explain Why You Must, Sadly, decline the opportunity to be the new Pit Moderator”. See: Explain why you must, sadly, decline the opportunity to be the new Pit moderator - Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share - Straight Dope Message Board. That thread is now closed, because:

This was a harmless, funny thread. It poked harmless, light-hearted fun at Ed Zotti - and it got shut down because of it. That’s absurd, and it points to precisely the reason that censoring a board like this is futile: when you start off just censoring a little bit, you annoy people, and then you begin penalizing the people who express that annoyance, and then the people who comment on that decision, and soon you have moderators making absurd decisions - like this one - to enforce an unenforceable, wrong-headed policy.

Yes, I said it. The Board has chosen a bad policy. You, Mr. Zotti, have enacted a bad policy. What will you do about it? I’m not swearing (even though this is the Pit), I’m not spamming, and I’m certainly not threatening anybody. All I’m doing is pointing out that placing the staff of this Board above all criticism, by fiat, is an absurd decision on a Board whose sole value is the free-flowing exchange of ideas. If you don’t like what I say in the Pit, Mr. Zotti, you should have the courage to defend yourself with counter-speech - and so should any other Mod.

But of course, Mr. Zotti, you cannot do that. Your policy is that there is to be no criticism of the staff, yourself included. I am willfully, intentionally violating that policy - and so I imagine you’ll have to punish me somehow, or your policy loses its teeth. So, I ask again - what will you do? Will you just close this thread? I shall start another - politely worded, as this one has been, but just as critical. Will you suspend me? I’ll criticize this policy again upon my return.

I despise censorship, Mr. Zotti, especially self-serving censorship, the kind meant for nothing more than to protect oneself from criticism of one’s own policies. I will continue to say so until you ban me, because this has got to stop. And when you ban me, this Board will be a little poorer for it - because, while I’m far from one of the really great posters on this Board, I like to think I’m a good one. And the next poster you ban might be a bit more prolific, a bit higher-quality than me - because Ford knows, I’m not the only one angry about this.

In a free society, Mr. Zotti, people need a certain thickness of hide. The Dope is valuable only to the extent that it is free. Stop trying to stifle criticism of this board - it is ineffective, harmful, and it makes you look very foolish.

I agree.

Well said Mr. Excellent. Apparently they believe the board will be much more exciting when we all speak in civil tones on topics on which we politely disagree and the mods will be by here and there to refill our tea.

Does anyone remember when Fox decided to make hockey broadcasts more exciting by highlighting the puck with a blue halo and blue streaks everytime they took a shot? Yeah, I think the new board policies will work about that well.

There’s no anti-criticism policy; there is, however, the usual rule that criticisms about the board or staff belong in either the Pit or ATMB. MPSIMS just isn’t the forum for it, and we don’t need Skald the Rhymer’s thread hijacked by people who don’t want to stick to light-hearted but do want to criticize how the board is run. If someone wants to start a new thread in the proper forum complaining about staff decisions, go at it.

The OP did, of course, I hope, notice that the thread was in MPSIMS, which is not - and has never been - a forum appropriate for criticizing the board, the admins, or the mods.

Bah, that’s why there’s a ‘move thread’ button. If the thread derails, deal with it and drop it into the pit.

I’m sure Skald is a big boy who can handle the trauma of having a thread go off-topic.

Heh. At which point someone would be criticizing Skip for not having the ability to control a simple MPSIMS thread.

“Why, oh why, did you put a light-hearted MPSIMS thread into the Pit, you imcompetent bastard?”

Anytime any moderator does anything, the thread is no longer light-hearted anyways. More of a unfolding crime-scene or self-solving moral dilemma. Ergo, nothing to complain about.

Jeez, first day here?

Coughs

Shuffles weight from foot to foot

Climbs off soapbox

Er. Um. Ah - well, good! Don’t let me catch you guys changing that! Yah!

Sorry, all - guess I misunderstood the current policy. Ah. Sorry, Ed.

That’s one option, yes, but I don’t think it’s a good one in this case. Skald didn’t mean for it to be a Pit thread, and I don’t see why his thread needs to turn into one. As it is, he can start a new thread later, and those who want to complain are welcome to start their own thread (or attend an existing one) in the Pit.

Normally I wouldn’t even close it; I’d just ask people to keep aware of the forum and confine their complaints to ATMB or the Pit. In this case, however, it seemed inevitable that the comments would keep coming regardless of any mod note, and we’d have to close it down, anyway–while possibly handing out a few warnings for people who ignored or missed our requests. I’d prefer to avoid all that drama by having Skald start the same thread at a later time.

Possibly. suspicious look Why?

Hey, what’s that red dot on Mr. Excellent’s forehead?

So, Mr. Excellent, were you going for a Keith Olbermann Special Comment pastiche? If so, well done, though somewhat light on the barely disguised vitriol and contumely.

What can I say? I’m new to the Olbermann thing. Don’t I get points for factual inaccuracy, though?

There’s a cover charge. Also you’ll have to wear the cow suit.

Gah!

Flees

I guess this is what happens when a Pit thread turns into a MPSIMS thread

Nah, fleas are black, not red, unless you squish them 'tween your thumbnails, THEN they’re red.

But the word “puce” means “flea” and is used for a reddish-brown color.

Using both thumbnails? Evolution gave you opposable thumbs for a reason, and that’s so you don’t have to use both hands to squash things like ants.
