This forum requires that you wait 120 seconds between searches

Absolutely no doubt!

Ah, reverse psychology.

The mistake you made was pulling that card too soon. Bugs Bunny, the most prominent practitioner of the technique, waited a full four rounds of “Duck Season!” “Rabbit Season!” before reversing it and tricking Daffy Duck into demanding that Elmer Fudd shoot the duck.

You didn’t allow the argument to develop enough emotional inertia before trying the switcheroo. Otherwise, it might have worked.

ETA: As indicated earlier, I never use the local search feature, so the time limit between searches never affected me here. On other boards, I have had occaision to use local searches, and yeah, I admit, cooling my heels for two minutes after discovering my earlier search wasn’t good enough is annoying.

Regarding the suggestion to lower the cooldown for paying subscribers… good marketing idea, but if the limitation is driven by practical technical issues (i.e., too much resource utilization caused by too rapid searching), just raking in the bucks won’t fix the underlying problem, and even if it increases subscription revenues, I doubt it would be enough to pay for the technical resources needed to absorb the impact. As a feature, I doubt it would pay for itself.

Don’t worry. I’m sure soon enough someone who understands your vague, pretentious mumbo jumbo will come along.

You need to stop doing this now. I’ll get an answer regarding the delay when I can, but the general idea is that we wanted to keep people from searching too often in order to reduce traffic. If you’re looking for something on the board, my advice is to use Google. We have a separate thread that explains how to use Google to search the board.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might give you, but it’s a balance of resources in the system that brought about the search delay in the first place.

The search function is about the most server-intensive thing in the system. When you add up all the users we have – which are, frankly, more than we’ve ever had before – there’s already huge pull in just people signing on and reading and writing posts.

The delay is necessary to keep things in balance as much as possible and enable everyone to be able to access the system.

It’s why we recommend people to use Google whenever possible. For most situations, that’s useful, faster, more powerful than the search function built into vbulletin, which is not very robust.
