I finally caught up with this (1942) movie last night. I really enjoyed it; albeit some of the acting was rather wooden.

Veronica Lake. But yes, a sad life indeed.
I thought it was a fine movie. I haven’t seen it for a while, but the scene where she makes him give back the money he stole from her pocket is really good, and believable.
Gosh- I just realised what F U Shakespeare corrected me on- of course it was Veronica.
