This Is The Ray Davies Appreciation Consortium!

Do you like the sarcastic wit of Mr. Davies and his group The Kinks?

Here is your chance to tell all Doper-Dom of your admiration.

For me, it’s The Village Green Preservation Society

But then “I’m not the world’s most passionate guy”!

Q

I like Kinks’ tunes in all their different varieties.

My favorite is still Come Dancing, although Lola is a close second. Of course Father Christmas is a must for any holiday season.

Also, there’s something about a singer who vaguely resembles Marty Feldman that I just can’t resist. Must also be why I liked Men at Work.

Now, now, Dave Davies founded the Kinks…

But please carry on!

Does it bug anyone else when newspapers or magazines talk about influential groups of the 60s, and they get in the Who, Beatles, and Rolling Stones, and…and…and of course they never mention the Kinks!

I’ve seen this in both American and British publications…

You really got me!

But,

Where have all the good times gone?

I think Van Halen were some of the biggest Kinks fans.

The thing I don’t get is why all these Californians are upset about his Governorship.

Hey, pseudotriton…good one.

As a person who generally likes folk music more than rock I’ve had a fantasy of getting a dozen top folkies of assorted ilk to do a salute to the Kinks with some of Davies’ songs. He certainly has written a lot of songs they could enjoy. Like:
Alcohol
Muswell Hillbillies
Last of the Steam-Powered Trains
Village-Green Preservation Society
Some Mother’s Son
She Bought a Hat like Princess Marina
People Take Pictures of each other (a natural for a Klezmer band, I think).

I remember back in college in the early seventies when a friend of mine discovered an album he had purchased with several others and forgotten to open and listen to. He played it and we both sat there amazed. What a great album. It was ARTHUR, by the Kinks. A concept album before TOMMY.

All the houses on the street have got a name
Cause all the houses on the street they look the same…

Fifteen Iguana

When I saw this topic, two things came to mind:

  1. The Kinks are probably the most underrated band ever; and

  2. This thread belongs in Cafe Society.

And I agree with both!

Sorry that I placed it here. I’m supposed to know better.

Quasi

Hah !

“And we’ll buy up the towns.
And we’ll knock em all down.
Build a brand new world of our own.”

Still get a tear in my eye when I play
“Shepherds of the nation”

-I always was a sucker for rock operas, like Preservation.

Ms Boods, I saw The Kinks here in Atlanta in two different venues: The Civic Center and an old movie theater called The Capri. What the hell happened to their following?

People pay hundreds of bucks to see The Stones replay all of their old stuff, so even if Ray and Dave haven’t done anything that great of late, they should still command a large audience following. The Capri gig was so dismal I wanted to go onstage and apologize to the band.

Yes, it bothers me mightily when writers write about the so-called “British Invasion” and forget The Kinks. I remember being 15 and seeing them on the cover of Meet The Kinks! I thought they looked so cool, and when I heard the album I knew I wanted to play the same kind of music, and I did.

Enough. I am looking forward to the next offering of the Davies Brothers, and will treasure it as I have everything else that I have in my collection.

Q

Sorry, that should have been the cover of You Really Got Me! Apologies!

This seems like a good time to ask this question:

How is Davies pronounced? I got into a debate with a friend once because I had heard that it is properly pronounced “Davis”, not “Daveez”. Can anyone help me out?

And, yes, I love the Kinks. Even my Mom does, she loves Ray Davies’ voice.
