THis is The Worst Week For Movies...ever?

If the Polish film “In Darkness” is showing in your city, I’d recommend seeing it. It’s directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa) and was released not long ago. It’s the true story of Jews being hidden in the sewers of Lvov and of the Poles who protected them. It’s not as good as “Rose”, which I think will win best foreign film for 2012, but it’s watchable.

In Darkness played here before the Oscars but I didn’t get a chance to see it. I’ll put Rose on my radar now.

EH, what will you be seeing?

I’m standing outside Starbucks waiting for tonight’s EUFF movies. Beyond is a comedy from Sweden, directed by Pernilla August, a legendary Swedish actress, though most Westerners would only know her as Anikin’s mom in The Phantom Menace. It stars Noomi Rapace, the Swedish Girl With A Dragon Tattoo. The other is Putin’s Kiss, a documentary from Denmark.

I like seeing the little films from places like Slovakia, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Romania, etc. There are some real gems from places you wouldn’t expect.

For the record, since posts are forever, Beyond is NOT a comedy. Absolutely not, far far from it. I have no idea where I got it ino my head that it was a comedy, since I didn’t read a synopsis before buying the ticket. Noomi plays a woman who’s called to her dying mother’s bedside. Everyone thinks she should be sad and upset, but they don’t know what a horrible childhood she had, which we see thanks to constant flashbacks. For those who’ve seen the Swedish Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, the same actress who played Lisbeth Salander as a child (she with the carton of gasoline and the match) also played the young Noomi Rapace in Beyond. Both are such good actors!

Yep, Arriety is a really great kids movie that the whole family should enjoy.

Another enthusiastic vote for John Carter. Good flick, shame there probably won’t be any sequels.
