This Is Us - Season 2

I haven’t seen a thread yet for Season 2 yet so I thought I’d get one rolling.

So, I guess we learned how Jack died, and it wasn’t a drunk driving accident.

Did they just get a new puppy that he had to rescue? I’m sure there’s more to the story and I don’t want to spoil anything yet.

I think the scene where Kate is told she is just not good enough was pretty great.

(Posted from the thread I started in error.)

We got some more insight into Jack’s death…appears to be a fire. Kate has a chip on her shoulder about her weight, so it was an epiphany for her to realize she didn’t get the singing gig not because of her size, but because she needs to work on her singing (quite frankly I didn’t hear that much difference between her and Amber, although Amber had a bit more powerful voice, but then again, I’m not a professional singer.)

Kevin and Kate are very close and I can see Toby resenting that. I’m glad Kevin and Toby talked about that. Kevin can get away with a hickey because Jack and Rebecca were embroiled in their own troubles.

Remind me…Randall quit his job because his boss sent him pears after William died, not remembering he’s allergic? It was nice to see William again. I thinking bringing an older troubled child into the house will be quite the challenge. I look forward to seeing that play out

No problem. I’ve reported the duplicate threads and asked for a merge.

I am curious about how long they can continue teasing us with this without actually portraying the event. The show could conceivably go on for many seasons as it has, simultaneously portraying multiple timelines. I just wonder how long they will withhold the details of Jack’s death.

I thought he quit because his boss brought in a new guy that was clearly going to be his replacement.

He had what looked like a nervous breakdown because of all of the stuff going on in his family coupled with the pressure of trying to compete with the new guy. Then after his father died, Randall quit as a direct response to the company’s unfeeling response, but that was just the precipitating event. Burnout and new priorities were probably more important causes.

The shot of the burned-out house made me think immediately of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

I loved the fact that Kate’s audition completely subverted the cliche. I fully expected her to demand do-over with a different song, that would blow everyone’s socks off. Nope…she’s just not that good. That never happens.

I don’t know that I’m convinced Jack dies in the house fire. His belongings in the car seat don’t look charred, and the producers have thrown a few false leads about his death already. However, the dog clearly plays a major part somehow. I do think that the details will be revealed this season though, because people may start to lose interest if it keeps hanging out there without some answers.

A friend of mine at work watches the after show, and he said Justin (the guy who plays Kevin) that there are foreshadowing Easter eggs (for want of a better term.)

In the “current past” Kevin does not have a broken leg, the Pearsons do not have a dog, and Randall does not have a red-headed girlfriend. So as time goes on, when they get a dog, when Randall meets someone, when Kevin breaks his leg, you know we’re getting closer.

Now, considering how much the kids look up to Jack, it’s unlikely that Kevin and Kate would be as close as they are if Kate were overtly responsible for Jack’s death. She feels responsible, but it could be something as simple as begging the family to keep a dog, and then later the dog wags his tail and knocks over a candle, starting the fire.

I also don’t think the kids were home when the fire started. If Jack pulled something heroic and pulled everyone out of the fire and then say, went back to get the dog, the ambulance would have taken Jack to the hospital (we see Rebecca returning with his belongings to the house) and the family would have followed. I think they were all doing their own thing (Kevin on a date with Sophie, for example) and somehow ended up at Miguel’s house. Randall and Kate know Jack is dead, but Kevin does not, as Kate has to tell him.

Bottom line, keep an eye out for broken legs, dogs, and red-heads.

My apologies for starting the Season 2 thread and then letting it drop off the front page. I haven’t been able to watch the show in real time the last few weeks and just got caught up on the DVR last night.

ivylass we found out what happened with Kevin’s leg (football injury that he re-injured years later in the movie shoot) and where the dog came from (a stray found eating the burgers and fries that Bec tossed while they were talking in the car). No redhead for Randall yet though?

I’m glad that the fake parent that Randall met in the park was just some woman trying to hit him up for money. I was afraid it was going to be a creepy pervy guy.

One thing I was wondering with Randall and Beth being foster parents. Do they usually start you right off the bat with a troubled teen? I’d think they’d ease you into foster parenting with a baby or toddler that doesn’t have quite so much baggage yet.

Sylvester Stallone as the Army’s oldest lieutenant – apparently he’s been in for 40 years without getting a promotion.

I do NOT like the story line with the troubled kid. At ALL. The whole thing is rubbing me the wrong way and does not seem believable, at least to me.

It does seem kind of shoehorned in. Is that how adoptions like that work? No meetings and such with the kid first? Just drop a new kid off at the house?

I don’t know all the details, but it’s probably significant that this is a foster care situation, not an adoption. It’s probably a much less formal arrangement.

I imagine it’s usually used for emergency placement. Deja’s mother was arrested, they had to get the kid somewhere. I think it’s obvious she’s afraid Randall is going to molest her, and how horrified will he be when he finds out?

Kate is preggers, Kevin is going to have an addiction problem a la Jack, and Bec’s mom is a racist bitch. So glad Randall’s response to her realization that’s he’s a special boy was, “What took you so long?”

Also, “Grandma killed Martin Luther King!” had me rolling. I also have a FitBit and will plead the fifth on whether or not I check out my calorie burn after sexyfuntimes.

Foster care does often work like that. If a kid is removed from her family she needs somewhere to live. The social worker calls a foster family and asks if they can take her. The family can say yes or no. If they say yes the kid will move in with the family immediately. There’s nowhere else for the state to put kids. They need adult supervision. You can’t put them up in a hotel and state institutions are a thing of the past.

State foster program here requires you to go to classes so you’re prepared for children with all kinds of special needs and from special circumstances. Surely it’s like that in other states! They should have been a little less clueless about what they were getting in to before they had a child come in to their home.

Knowing how buttoned up Randall is, I’m sure they took the classes. They just didn’t show it.
