This is why no TV 4 me: "Thanks for offering to help. If you fail, I'll kill you."

So, the TV’s turned on to Mythquest. Not watching it, but as I pass it, I catch a snippet - apparently, it’s like a time travel thing and the scene is ancient Egypt or somewhere like that (did you know that ancient Egypt was populated by lily-white people who were served by darker-complexioned people?):

Scene at the royal court:

Queen: Oh, my baby won’t stop crying! Why won’t my baby stop crying! Oh, if only someone could make my baby stop crying!
Peasant Girl (approaching throne): I’d like to help you make your baby stop crying, your highness!
Queen: Oh, good! Don’t waste any time - please come here! By the way, if you don’t make my baby stop crying, I will kill you!

Now, - really stupid writing. What queen in her right mind would react to an offer of assistance by threatening to kill the person who volunteered??? That is just such a stupid scenario, so unbelievable. Major

"That’s entertainment! "

I have never seen the program you mention, but are you saying there have never been any mad and capricious rulers?

Just one of those you-had-to-be-there experiences, I guess, if you didn’t see it.

It’s unlikely that, within the space of 30 seconds, between “someone please get my baby to stop crying”, “okay, let me try”, “please do, you’re dead if you fail”, a monarch would say something so politically unsavvy. Now, DOES THAT NEGATE nutjobs like Vlad the Impaler or Saddam Hussein or the Shah of Iran or …

wait a minute - maybe it’s not such a strange scenario - hmmmm?

In some situations in ancient Egypt, there WERE light-complected rulers, ruling dark-skinned folks. The Hyksos were northern barbarians, described as light skinned and red haired, and they ruled with an iron fist for 200 years.

Despite what some Afrocentric historians have claimed, Cleopatra was largely Macedonian in ancestry, and inbred like anything. It seems unlikely that she was dark skinned.

By the same token, there were any number of dark-skinned Pharaohs who ruled light-skinned folks, particularly after Ahmose kicked the Hyksos out…
