"This Modern World"/Tom Tomorrow appreciation thread

This Modern World, by Tom Tomorrow!

His website.

I’ve been meaning to do this ever since this Pit thread got hijacked, and today’s strip is so perfect that it seems like the time. No, Tom Tomorrow’s political humor ain’t subtle, but it’s usually dead on.

I’m not a big fan of Tom Tomorrow, but I think this is brilliant!

I like the ones with Glox News.

Yargle bargle!

I’ve always enjoyed TMW, but Tom Tomorrow really won me over in one strip where he disclosed some little-known but important fact about a then-current political topic and Sparky added: “And if you didn’t already know that, isn’t it absurd that you had to learn it from a comic strip?” Media criticism at its finest.

I was always partial to Anagram Man and Song-In-Your-Head Boy.

My fave was the one with Dubya trying to direct Saddam & Osama bin Laden in one of those “buddy-buddy” cop movies where both protagonists loathe each other, but get the “bad” guy in the end. Worked on so many levels (I’d search for it if my system wasn’t hiccuping-from 2002-03 or so IIRC).

I remember that, but I’m pretty sure the actual quote was “…had to learn it from a talking penguin in a comic strip?”

Was it this one?

It’s not always political humor either. This cartoon was 100% spot-on in 1997, just as I left NYC for 2 years in Baltimore while fantasizing about a triumphant return to a duplex apartment or even a Brooklyn brownstone (which didn’t happen)… And it only got more and more true as the late 1990s wore on into the real estate bubble years of the 2000s. (Heck, I would say it’s STILL true for a lot of people.)

His art style takes getting used to but I love his work. Actually I have to give him credit for introducing me to the liberal blogosphere. It was from his web site that I first went to DailyKos, Atrios and others.

Yep, Nicest of the Damned, thanks. The third panel still makes me chuckle…

Even though I am conservative, I love his strip.

I thought it was really cool that Pearl Jam got Tom Tomorrow to do the art for their most recent album (2009’s Backspacer). He apparently went to a lot of trouble to come up with things that would be meaningful to the band. Several images on the cover are apparently based on things he got the band members to tell him about nightmares they’d had as kids or other weird things they remembered from childhood.

TMW archives going back to 1990! Check it out!

Today’s is another Glox News 'toon – and it is out of the park!
