My internet is slow today. That’s probably the root cause. But it’s making discourse really laggy and unpleasant to use.
I used to get a lot of blank pages and non-functional buttons with an older version of Chrome. Wound up having to change to another computer to get a newer version of Chrome just so I could read a dad-blasted message board.
Yeah, that’s probably it. Discourse is constantly updating the user’s view, so a bad connection could foul things up.

The board is somewhat usable with javascript disabled. It goes into a pagination mode, though it uses fairly short pages (20 posts - not sure if there’s a setting somewhere) and lacks the critical ‘first page’ and ‘last page’ shortcuts. But it might be worth trying in a limited-bandwidth setting. (Make sure you refresh the page immediately after disabling javascript!)
Also, just wanted to echo that the Vincent theme actually makes the board relatively pleasant to look at. Some people may hate the colors, but individual posts are set apart much more nicely and everything has good contrast. The default theme is terrible. It still only uses a very narrow width.

Lemme know what you think. I turned js back on because the lack of ‘last page’ link seemed like a real problem. And infinite scroll is made less irritating by the presence of the slider.
I’m not sure I like how narrow it is. I did prefer to have the posts go all the way across the page.
It does seem as though this setup requires much more scrolling for the same amount of content.
Adjusting personal preferences for your tastes seems to be key in determining the experience thus far. I’d suggest messing with those first, then asking/complaining about the stuff you still can’t adjust.
I auto-zoomed my page in by 20%.
How do I get rid of this stupid nested reply option? It did not do this earlier today, all replies were in one thread. Now, replies further back in threads have “1 Reply,” “2 replies” etc under them. I am using the Sam’s Simple interface, I also tried Discourse Classic and it’s the same.
That’s standard Discourse on most devices. Almost everybody just ignores that pseudo-nested view, though, since it’s not particularly helpful.
The replies still show up in their proper places in the thread.

Do you mean the browser zoom? It doesn’t fix the width issue, though it certainly allows you to cram more content in per scroll, though at the cost of text size.
Yeah, I got an extension that lets me set every page to whatever zoom level I want. It doesn’t fix the Discourse problem, but it does help a bit.

Like so many pieces of technology, the solutions (at least on the user end) seem to be to problems that didn’t exist.
I use the “Home” and “End” buttons a lot to scroll, and when I do that I now the site seems to think about for a second and put me somewhere intermediate in the page. The old site was nicely simple - there’s a top, there’s a bottom, and it was chronological. I don’t understand what I’m seeing now. Maybe I’ll get used to it, but at the moment I really don’t like it.
Yeah, infinite scroll sucks. That said, I haven’t actually experienced what you’re seeing here. I went to one of the super-long threads over in the pit, and home and end both have about a second delay, and then scroll the right position. The slider doesn’t reposition correctly, but it corrects as soon as I use the scroll wheel.
Well, I press “End” and the slider bar doesn’t end up at the bottom of the page.
You say this is called “infinite scroll”? What’s the point?
Also don’t like how the “reply” function creates an overlay instead of it being part of the page like on the old site. And can I hide these silly avatars and just see names?
