Well, it’s different. In a very long thread, for example, the scrollbar will only let you scroll around what’s loaded (though it should load more as you get towards the bottom or the top.) The slider lets you scroll across the entire length of the thread (though with less precision.)

I figured out that if I click on the “topic progress” button on the lower right of the screen, it will pull up a new box containing the thread with the slider and I can move through the thread with it. When I stop at the post I want, I have to back out of the new box. Weird.
I thought I’d seen every browser on every device, but that’s a new one on me.
ETA: Oh! That. Heh–I never knew what it was called.
When I first arrived at the site I couldn’t get it to work at all, but I soon realised (after a lot of browser testing) that it was because I still had Greasemonkey scripts targeted for this URL which were interfering with the code. So just in case others are struggling, check for things like that and turn them off.
I did figure it out on mobile. On iOs Safari at least, there is a blue bar at the bottom that has the post numbers. If you click it, it opens up a window that has the blue scroll bar which can easily be dragged to the top or bottom. It also has an option to jump to a specific page number or date.

Not that anyone cares, I’m just one person, but I think I’m probably just going to stop reading or posting. The format reminds me of free software written by someone that doesn’t understand what people want.

In some of the themes it’s really hard to see. I’m in material design theme because I really like the look of it better than any of the others, but that bar’s almost invisible. I’ve got an indicator on the right hand sidebar that apparently tells you which post number and where you are in the thread – that right now says 121/131, and just to the left of it, very faint, is that scrollbar. I thought at first this theme didn’t have it at all; but now that I know where to look I can use it OK.
All I gots to say is, get rid of the fucking badges.
Oh, just ignore the fucking badges. I’ve got a small drawerful of them already. You get them for the silliest pettiest things. Oh look! I got a badge for my first reply to a post! Oh look! I got another badge for posting my first link! Oh look! I got yet another badge for spoon-feeding myself and not spilling any!
Maybe we can sell our badges out on the street for drug money.
One funny thing that’s happening on another Discourse board I use is the Velociraptor badge. Neither staff nor the recipients will tell what the requirements are. You just get it when you get it, whether you want it or not.
I think if this had been a new board I was checking out totally, it wouldn’t be so strange, it’s because it’s the Dope that everything is all out of whack.
I hate how you have to click “replies” under some posts. If you scroll too fast, you might miss it. Grrrr. Oh well, I’ll get used to it.
You don’t. That’s just a shortcut way to see who’s replied to a thread. It doesn’t work very well, and all of the replies you see there are also downthread somewhere.
Well that makes it even more confusing!
Most people just ignore the reply feature. Like I said, it’s not very helpful.
It’s useful if you’re about to reply to an older post so you don’t repeat what’s been said.
