This one's for Jodi: The Good Lawyer Story War!

Alright, well, in light of a number of threads recently about how bad lawyers are, and especially in light of Jodi’s thread in the pit stating that she is leaving thanks to lawyer protests, I offer a new angle on the debate. Instead of sitting around arguing back and forth theoretically about the issue, let’s prove it on fact. I challenge everyone who doesn’t like lawyers to post your SPECIFIC lawyer stories here, and I bet that myself and the rest of the lawyer supporters can come up with two to counter it.

Now, in the interest of keeping this specific, there should be no “My friend’s cousin’s old girlfriend’s lawyer…” etc., just personal experiences or cites. By doing this, I’m hoping that we can prove to all the frustrated Doper lawyers like Jodi that we DO care, and perhaps persuade our old friend to come back. I’ll keep score, and interject stories as need be, but for now, let’s get this thing started!

By no “personal” experiences, I mean no rumors, muddled stories, etc. you might have heard. You CAN state what has happened to a close friend, relative, or anything of that sort, but try to keep it to aquaintences of the First Degree, and try to put in facts, just so it’s clear you’re not making stories up.

Hey Jester,

I first want to say I don’t like Jodi leaving either. I too have enjoyed reading her posts and she seems to be a very nice person. I also wanted to say she doesn’t fit into the category of lawyers mainly PI or plaintiff attorneys that I dislike so anything I might have said about those type of lawyers did not apply to her what so ever. Her field in law in my opinion help lawyers good name. Matter of fact I wish she would come back and if I did offend her, I apologize.

As far as lawyer stories that happen to me personally I could type for hours on all the unethical things I have seen plaintiff or PI lawyers do or say. You can read one of them I already posted on the thread about me in the pit. (Sorry don’t know to reference a thread.) And I know that all plaintiff lawyers aren’t bad either but of the 8 to 10 I have met only 1 or 2 were decent human beings. I am sorry that y’all think that I am being unfair but that is just what I have ran into and seen with my own eyes. And that is from experience not just rumors. So with my sample I gauge that over 70% of plaintiff lawyers are mean, unjust and vicious people with 30% truly caring about ethics and justice. Maybe that is not statistically correct but it seems that way to me.

I hope I din’t offend anybody especially you Jester I think your pretty cool too. It is just the way I have been treated by them that makes me feel this way.

well, isnt’ that great. You start a thread asking for POSITIVE stories about lawyers, and your first response is a rehash of other threads NEGATIVE stories.

When my husband left, he took his share of the rent $$, left me with the child (age 1 1/2), the pets (2 cats and some fish), all the bills (including a $800 charge for a washer and dryer I didn’t want to do, but he assured me he’d help pay) etc, promising a whopping $35 a week in c/s (daycare at the time was $60 per week).

I called a lawyer (who had a national reputation). He told me that I could legally change the locks on the house (we were on an unwritten lease for a house owned by a friend of mine), and he’d check in with another lawyer in his firm to take my case. She was wonderful. She knew I had limited funds, I told her the only things I cared about was getting the child support up to at least $50 a week, I had to have physical custody of my son. She managed to do all that, never called me unneccessarily, and my bill was $250 (in 1986).

When after the divorce was finalized, my ex told me he was going to “get custody, now that he was remarried”, I called my lawyer, and got all the assurance that I needed that it wouldn’t happen. Wonderful woman.

Wring,

What the heck are you talking about. Why don’t you go up and read jester op again. I don’t think you read it very well or I didn’t. But one of us is just plain out wrong and I think it is you.

Telling personal stories is really more of a MPSIMS thing, not a Great Debate. So I’m moving the thread there.

Well, gee.

Isn’t the Christian Holy Spirit a lawyer?

The Father gives the Law, the Son obeys the Law, and the Holy Spirit advises on the Law – that last bit being one of the lawyers main duties.

I think that trumps!

Wildest Bill,

You made your opinion of lawyers quite clear in other threads. So why do you find it necessary to express your opinion in this thread when the whole point of this thread is to share positive experiences.

:wally

I have no lawyer stories personally, good or bad. I really have nothing against lawyers and feel that they are both altruistic watchdogs over our freedoms and money grubbing scum and everything in between.

I did not see the thread in the pit where Jodi said her goodbyes, but I feel it’s a little disingenuous of a lawyer to feel put upon because people denigrate their profession. It seems to me that a lawyer needs a fairly thick skin, as a certain amount of societal contempt is, and has been for a long time, part and parcel of the job. It seems to me that weathering insults as a lawyer is an unavoidable occupational hazard, akin to being exposed to weird germs as a doctor, or being shot at as a cop. It’s not fair, but nevertheless that’s the way it is. I wish Jodi wouldn’t leave, since I enjoy her posts. She’s tenacious and presents her points well.

yes, Bill, although the Title says “Good lawyer wars” he DOES ask for ** all ** stories. I just assumed, incorrectly as it turns out, that given your claim to “like” Jodi, the claim that you don’t hate all lawyers and, frankly your story itself (which, if you look at it, is about a lawyer who gave you advice which helped you AVOID a huge potential cash payout), that maybe, just maybe, you’d post on THAT, instead of vague statements like “70% of these lawyers I’ve seen do or say unethical things”, and rehash of your prior entire THREADS where you bash all lawyers.
