This shit has got to stop

Truth be told, it’s been awhile since I’ve heard a car with one of those stereos where all you hear is WHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMPPP from ten miles away. Seemed like more of an 80s or 90s thing.

Seriously,

The last time I heard something close was this summer when I was coming back from the park. This dude was parked with some ear-splitting gloria gaynor type stuff blaring. Really weird, right?

Well the hilarious thing was that about 4 or 5 people walking down the street stopped to ridicule and generally humiliate the guy! It was priceless. He promptly drove off in shame.

Stuff like this used to happen all the time when I lived down in Louisiana (now that I’m up North, it never happens - no idea why). I got fed up enough with it that I made it a point to walk past the offending car on my way into the store with a wincing expression on my face and a finger in each ear. I was surprised at how many people turned their stereos down when I did that.

I can’t listen to my music loud, it really hurts my ears. I even wear ear plugs at concerts!
It’s less that loud music bothers me then I just have no concept of enjoying music that loud.
Any time I’ve been around loud music/noise without some kind of protection, my ears always feel like they’re bleeding.

One fun story involving music at a red light though.
So a group of us college kids were heading to Walmart, windows rolled down, music up (but low enough that we could talk to each other). A song we all know comes on the radio and we start singing to it, then pull up and stop at this red light. A few seconds later another car pulled next to us, their windows rolled down and music up and they were singing along…to the same song! We looked at other then start rocking out til the light turned green. Much laughter was had after.

you do realize I was kind of defending you, I hope. You just said you don’t do it in residential areas, and the like. I think I was only mistaken in calling it a contest at a red light. You can play your stereo as loud as you like when you are kind of sure its not disturbing everyone within a half mile. I might not like it, but I did not condemn you for that. I spoke of people that either through their need for attention or lack of consideration do it all of the time in public as though no one else around has any feelings or rights.

I did not accuse you of that. But we all know people that do that would probably turn it down at the first sign of a cop, which makes it a little slimier. Again, I did not say YOU did that. I don’t know if you do or not. You like loud music. Fine. While I think you’re being unfairly jumped on a bit here, if you’re not going out of your way to be one of the ignorant, inconsiderate jackholes like in my OP I’m cool with it. I may not like it, the loud music and all, but in my OP I said these folks were going beyond even what you woulkd think is loud. If pieces of your vehicle are visible shuttering, if I can hear it a 1/4 mile away, if people even ten fucking feet from you can’t hear each other talk its too loud. Period. Thers a differnece between I like to play music loud and I like to play it loud enough to annoy every other sentient being within eyesight and beyond.

Window rattling, heart attack inducing noise (at that level, it’s not music) is extremely common here in S Cal. If I am stuck at a light with one of these dweebs and there is a clear sight line, almost always giving them the “disapproving Grandma look” will stop it. A couple of times I’ve run all my windows down and opened the sunroof and blasted Garth at them, which has worked too. And once, when I finally got sick of the kid across the street sitting in his driveway doing this, I walked up and yelled

ARE YOU DEAF???

right into his left ear, then laughed like a goon when he jumped so much he hit his head on the roof of his car.

They want attention, I give them attention. I tend to believe that lack of response indicates approval, and I sure don’t want them to think I like that noise!

In my old neighborhood about 10-12 years ago, which was in rapid decline, neighbors two doors down (pretty nasty people) would get a visitor at about 2-3am on week nights who would leave his car parked out front with the stereo blasting while he went into the house. One night, having had enough of that shit, I walked out, reached in the window and turned it down. The guy came flying out of the house like it was on fire, saw me and said “You can get shot doing that” followed by a few more choice words.

I turned to face him, which showed the pistol shoved in my front pocket. (I may be crazy, but I’m not stupid. These were nasty people.) I said “So can you. Some of us work for a living. Don’t park in my neighborhood at 3am on a fucking tuesday with your stereo playing this loud when you’re not even in the fucking car.” And walked back to my house.

Never heard it again.
Right now I’m having an issue with the co-worker next to me who hasn’t gotten the message about a> playing his music at his desk too loudly (we’re a call center) and b> playing music with a lot of profanity (again, we’re a call center). He’s only been warned three times in three weeks. Oh, but a song he likes comes on and he cranks it up to where I not only can’t hear my own music, but to where the people I’m speaking with can most certainly hear the profanity.

Then he gets really quiet and angry looking when I say something about it.

I hope they’re really loud when they tell him he’s fired. Otherwise he might not hear it.

Jeezuz, where do you live? I don’t think you were wrong, but when the argument has to come down to dueling pistols over loud music…well, thats another level right there. I’d have called the police first.

Good, guy sounds like a real asshole.

While I don’t want anyone to lose their job, especially this close to Xmas when the economy is in the toilet, this guy seems to be asking for it. He probably thinks the rest of you are “haters”. That seems to be a side effect of being the center of the omniverse.

Yep. Thanks. I was just clarifying the part I bolded, and apparently I was more clear the 2nd time around.

For the most part, tho, I do play my music loud without consideration etc. etc. But my aim isn’t to annoy people. I realize it prolly happens at times, I just don’t care usually.

I mean, I don’t go around giving people shit about the crappy outfit they left the house in (okay, once I did, but she had it coming), their hairstyle, chewing gum, or any of the other bajillion annoying things that people do in public. They’ll be oos/oom soon enough, so why sweat it? Just like I’ll be down the road as soon as the light changes. Speed up or slow down, you don’t have to drive next to me.

I mean, why not try a different attitude, and smile at someone who is out enjoying themselves immensely, rather than trying to piss on their parade?

You know, I was going to make a crack along the lines of “Loud car stereos. Keeping audiologists employed for over thirty years,” but I think your remark is better. Well done!

I remember being a teenager and thinking that there were tons of women out there waiting to have sex with me, but they would not be able to find me in time unless I pumped out a high-wattage Led Zeppelen Beacon of Love™ to guide them. Good times. Stupid times.

See, now this was dickish behaviour. Every municipality has noise ordinances, and 3am is no time for loud music within most city limits.

This guy is out of line, too. It’s work, not a party. I don’t like any music at work. It’s often a safety issue in my work, and since I listen to some pretty out-there extreme stuff, it’s a safe bet that I don’t want to hear your music just as much as you don’t want to hear mine.

Enjoy it while you are still able to hear it.

Thank you. I will.

Just out of curiosity Bo, if you like your music that loud but don’t want to annoy people…what’s wrong with head/earphones?

Never mind in about 20 years or so! We are in high demand now!! The profession of audiology has been in the top 10 or so jobs in US News and World Report for the past 3 years (or so my pharmacology professor told me!).

In Canada, as a new grad, at some of the large chains, it is possible to earn a six-figure salary. Even working for an ENT under a contract, it is easy to earn this kind of income. In the school setting or in some hospitals, the salary is not quite so high, but still well above the median income. Not sure what it it like in the US (I think salaries are a bit lower, inspite of the difference in the dollar). I work in manufacturing sector (company makes hearing aids) and I have managed to do very well over the past 18 years and would not give it up.

It is a great blend of science, anatomy, physiology, physics, psychology, and sociology. Low burn out, great working conditions, and high job satisfaction level.

We need more audiologists,so please encourage them!!

Hey, thanks! It was a nick I was given in university. Quasimodem is pretty cool, too! :stuck_out_tongue:

And I don’t care if you enjoy loud music. When you wake me up from a sound sleep (and I use a CPAP AND I have the radio going) or if I get a headache from your music, I just want you to KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. Get yourself some earplugs. Or go completely, permanently deaf, for all I care. Just keep that shit down to a reasonable level. There’s an old saying that “Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose.” Think of it like this…your right to play music ends at everyone else’s ears. I happen to like heavy metal, but I don’t have the right to inflict it on everyone else around me.

This is a particular sore spot for me because of our neighbors. The ones across the street like to play their music LOUD at all hours of the day and night. They like to park vehicles, turn the volume to 11, and then go inside and do whatever. The ones next door like to pull in at 2 AM, with radio blasting. Doesn’t bother me so much, as I’m generally in the back of the house with MY headphones on and can’t hear them, but my husband has to get up at 5.

I’m thinking of asking some cops to cruise by and issue noise citations. Yes, I’ve tried talking to the neighbors. No, it’s not a permanent solution. In one case, I don’t get anywhere because I don’t speak Spanish well enough. In the other cases, the noise MIGHT get turned down for a few minutes, but soon it’s cranked back up.

I’d like to echo this question, what’s wrong with head/earphones? …wrong with head/earphones? …with head/earphones? …head/earphones? …earphones?

At that time I lived in North Minneapolis. A call to the cops was likely to result in - at very best - a squad driving past the end of the block sometime in the next hour or so. That was the house where I displayed (never pointed, never fired) a pistol five times in 11 years to stop someone from breaking into my house when they knew I was home. The last time that happened, I called 911 before displaying the pistol. The cops drove down the alley and kept right on going - 45 minutes after the call.

I no longer live in the city of Minneapolis, but I still don’t trust their cops for shit. A point that was driven home when I was fired from a job a year ago - by corrupt (retired Minneapolis cops) bosses who lied to protect their own asses when I busted them for violating University policy.

The interesting thing there is that my ‘paragon of virtue’ boss had been fired from the Minneapolis cops for a> Mismanaging her unit, and b> Lying and withholding information in the course of an investigation (all that is public record - I got it by googling her name), but then sued for reinstatement - and was reinstated only long enough to get her affairs in order and retire.

Anyway, sorry for the hijack.
