What is the correct “mode” for a big hostile dude?
The mayor did a press release yesterday and mentioned that there had been quite a bit of that kind of minor crime in that specific area. Even mentioning the selling of loosies (individual cigarettes). Maybe he was sick of getting hassled by the cops all the time because he was getting hassled by the cops all the time for selling cigarettes.
Here’s the press release.
If they release a statement in a few days saying that his pockets or car were full of packs of cigarettes with no tax stamps on them (or NJ stamps) you’ll have nothing left to argue about.
Your logic is flawed, if you found a robber in your house and you called the cops on him, would you feel bad for him when he said “c’mon man, this is like the third time I’ve been arrested this month”? What if he was a big black guy? Would you tell the cops to let him go or at least go easy on him? Maybe give him a head start?
You ignoring the fact that the man was killed though
That really is secondary. It’s unfortunate and it sucks and I feel bad for his family and the cop shouldn’t have used a choke hold, but if he hadn’t resisted the arrested he’d still be alive.
And that was probably the result of the chokehold. Which, assuming that’s the case, was applied by one cop. The police department has forbidden chokeholds. So why are you holding every police officer responsible for what one police officer did?
I agree that the OP is certainly not logical with the whole “one cop is the same as all of them”.
However, every fucking cop in this video and situation is dumber than a bag of pigshit. These are the type that make their own rules, invent hypotheticals so they can arrest someone for nothing, refuse to hear the facts, refuse to hear witnesses. This man was cooperating the whole time. He’s not some “re-peat o-fender” ( like in Raising Arizonia ).
Then comes the proof that each cop there was a complete shithead. They mugged him from behind with the chokehold, refuse to let up AFTER he’s cuffed saying he can’t breathe over and over. Then when he’s not moving, they all stand there like Neanderthals waiting for him to do what?? Lunge at them?
Then the kicker: the dumbass who arrives to take charge (meaning just let him lay there) tells the dude to get in the house or leave. “I just wanna get my bike”, he says. I could not stop laughing when Officer In Charge comes back with, “You lost your chance to get your bike back, sir.” WTF??? He wants to control the “situation” which was started and baited entirely by these fucks inflicted with Blue Blood disease. No, shithead, he didn’t lose his chance, YOU and your uniform buddies lost the chance to be trusted and listened to when you created a situation that ultimately leads to a death using an illegal choke hold all started with bullying bullshit. None of these guys backed down because, um, ya know, blue brotherhood and… stuff??
I still disagree with the OP but I WILL say that this story is a reason never to TRUST cops again. But I didn’t need more evidence for that. This is still the go to job if your a high school dropout, like to kick ass and recite regulations you can’t spell or explain.
The Real Tragedy
The only thing I have to do on a Friday night is follow this Punch and Judy show. Jeezus, my life is sorry…
why was he arrested if all the witnesses said he did nothing wrong?
Well let’s see, dude:
Black? Check.
Used to sell single cigarettes? Check.
Six cops with a combined IQ totalling 28? Check.
Stopping a fight? That’s where the language Copease is spoken. “Stopping a fight is involved in a potentially harmful act to the public and possible influence of local gang ties.” Check.
As we discussed in another recent thread, one cop is way better than six. One blue boy throws a punch at an old lady, the rest jump in. They’re the poorest example of a collective. Where’s the Borg when ya need em?
I paid attention. He had definitely sold single smokes before, thought he was doin it again. The witnesses were saying he broke up a fight. Cop procedure like standing with your arms crossed means you’re waiting for backup. Not listening. Do you really think they were taking notes? What notes are there to take? “Man falsely accused-- waiting for backup-- too big for my ass.”
And your comment about “being harassed by police” is exactly what that was. Harassment. By shitheads with nothing to do but make up an arrest. Look, Boss! We’re working!
Because you’re not the only person who automatically assumes the police are always wrong? And therefore a lot of people are going to defend their neighbour against the police regardless of whether or not he’s guilty?
Weren’t you the guy who was complaining last week about how the police aren’t aggressive enough in arresting criminals in poor neighbourhoods?
Yup Arrest quota
No I said when a black man is killed in the ghetto the police have no interest in finding the killer.
As much as I won’t ever trust police, I can’t agree with a blanket statement. Plenty of ghetto killers have been caught, tried and convicted. This incident isn’t anything like catching a loose murderer. These guys in SI weren’t looking for a killer, they were looking to incite.
FBJJ, you skitter around like a drop of grease on a hot skillet. Pick one point and attempt to defend it.
Not to make light of what happened, but notice anything odd about the way the story appears in Google News (screenshot)?
Black guys resisting arrest is borderline Darwin award behavior. Not that he deserved to die, of course, it’s a ridiculous situation, but black dudes should kiss police officer ass. Anything else is like dangling steaks in front of a lion.
From the video, it just looked like he was frustrated and arguing. It was the police who escalated the situation, from the video, not him.
Black people should not have super-human expectations placed on them for certain situations – humans sometimes get frustrated, and sometimes argue. It’s unlikely that this was the first time this guy had argued with cops.
A lot of this is going to depend on what everyone means by escalated.
Eric escalated it by swatting at the officers. He broke free twice.
The officer escalated by using a choke hold instead of continuing to try to grab his arms. Unfortunately, my guess is that if he didn’t use a chokehold, Eric was probably going to end up getting tasered instead. I wonder if that would have caused him to go into cardiac arrest if his heart was so weak that an asthma attack killed him (via cardiac arrest).
If NYPD has enough time to arrest people for selling loosies, then it’s time to start the layoffs.
This street killing brought to you courtesey of the anti-smoking fascists and the politicians addicted to tobacco tax revenue.
