Go ahead and show your true feelings: The saddest song ever
“I Loved Her First” - Heartland
Ooof - I thought you were suggesting the Eric Clapton one! The Sinatra one is a decent suggestion, but has more of a romantic edge to it than father/daughter. So much of those lyrics say that her appearance has the effect of the singer loving her. That’s a little gross.
“Daughter” by Louden Wainwright III.
Lyrics here, since we’re not supposed to post them in full. Here’s a snippet:
My Daughter’s planning her wedding for the Spring (maybe) and has informed me the father/daughter dance will be one that
- I can dance to
- Is the first dance she remembers dancing
It’s The Hokey-Pokey. I’ve found an uptempo version by Brave Combo that’ll do nicely.
Just go with “Sunrise Sunset”. Don’t overthink things.
Does that mean that your dance experience is also severely limited? Your later reference to “slow enough to dance to” suggests that.
Whatever the song choice, you and your daughter will have to learn the same recognizable dance to dance to it. For something from pop music with a slow-to-medium tempo and relatively easy to learn, I’d go with East Coast Swing or Cha Cha.
Waltz also qualifies, but the first dance for the bride and groom is usually a waltz. Foxtrot is the classic American ballroom dance, but it is hard to learn.
Check your local community college for group ballroom dance lessons; costs around $50-$75 for 6-8 lessons. The effort, time, and money can be a good investment, as a dad who can dance is an enviable asset to a bride.
Damn, mrAru will dance around singing that to the cat … for me that would be a bad suggestion.
I know everybody tends to suggest Sunrise, Sunset but that is so damned overdone.
How about a nice instrumental, no lyrics. There are freaking thousands of lovely waltzes available [just perhaps not this one …especially if you are anybodies"Uncle Charlie"]
I just want to say that your daughter is officially awesome. You knew that already of course, but it’s always nice to have confirmation.
Similarly, when my kids marry (it will be a while) my dance is Sing from Sesame Street
My Little Girl by Tim Mcgraw with the added benefit in the song you subtly tell you future son in law he isn’t good enough for your daughter!
or
Grover Washington
“I am glad there is you” this is more for a song between husband/wife but it also is how I feel about my daughter so it could be used that way too
Here’s a good one.
Daughters by John Mayer.
My Little Girl by Tim McGraw.
Until/unless something better comes along, these will be what I’m using for my own daughter’s weddings (I have two daughters, not one that I expect to marry multiple times… not sure if I punctuated that properly:).
Runner’s Up:
Stealing Cinderella by Chuck Wicks. Definitely a father/daughter song but suffers from the fact that the singers voice is the daughters’ husband-to-be, not the father.
Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle. Undoubtedly written for the sole purpose of being a father/daughter dance song, but it is a little too saccharine-sweet for me.
My little girl stuff is way too creepy/sappy for my tastes, but that’s just me!
I would go with ‘Lean on Me’, everyone knows it, it’s a lovely sentiment, and, I think, appropriate for a Dad to his daughter.
Isn’t that your most fervent wish? That whatever may come, she does not hesitate to ‘Lean on you’?
How about Can’t Smile Without You?
IMO, it is her day:D it has to be all about her, so you have two choices.
- Ask her what song she would choose, and then YOU choose that one.
- You find out from someone else (friend/family member) what song your daughter would choose…and then choose that one.
I know you said her taste in music was not the best but, as I said it’s HER day, IMO if she wants ugly flowers or a bad song it’s ok…she’s not getting a face tattoo or hurting small woodland creatures.
Just my opinion, good luck
I was thinking Frank Sinatra. I looked at the lyrics online, and I think the tone of the singing would make a difference. But when in doubt, don’t, is probably best.
Followed by the Bunny Hop?
Considering how thrilled he is about the boyfriend, I’d say it’d be fitting. On a few levels.
