I’m a white american male (for the most part). How come I don’t get special treatment at any point? And if you claim, for a moment, that I get special treatment because I’m white, then you’re treading the grounds of Racism very carefully…
I pay the same price as everyone else, and I get paid the same as my other coworkers… 1 white guy, 1 chinese immigrant, and 1 card carrying native american.

You do get special treatment, whether or not you are aware of it or even seek it out. It’s not a reflection on you personally- just on the fact that you exist in a social, cultural and political environment in which fairer-skinned people still have an undue advantage. Simple examples - if you have a “white” name, you will tend to have better success in the job market than someone with a “black” name. (cite). Or, if you’re a white job applicant who discloses a prior criminal conviction during a job interview, you are more likely to get hired than a black job applicant who does not disclose a criminal conviction. (cite). I’m sure others can weigh in with studies of phenomena like racial steering in housing, discrimination in access to credit and financing, etc., etc.
I’ll think you’ll find that the correct meme is “MCDS TM”.

I didn’t read all 56 pages of the paper, but did you mean to say that a white person who does not lie on a job application, usually gets the job over a black person who does? Well slap my ass and call me suprised. :eek: :smack:
I know how fortunate I am, being a white male, I won’t deny it. I also know the ins and outs of the system, and how prevalent passive racism is in American society.
I think the days of outright racism are gone with 1950’s Mississppi. I think the real bigotry is cultural. I think the real bigotry reveals itself in music, in advertising, in business, in the daily operation of the corporate citizens who while courting their main customers, ignore a smaller customer base, simply because of their cultural choices, which, I know, relate in a real way to skin color and race, but I believe the fundamental bigotry to be cultural, rather than racial.
I don’t necessarily disagree with you buttonjockey. I was just going to point out that a lot of bigotry in this country is also based on social class rather than race or culture.

Marley23, can’t your point #2 be used in the exact same way for “Asian,” a fairly nebulous term for Japan, China, both Koreas, Pacific Islanders, and a whole lot else I’m sure I’m forgetting? Does that make it impossible to celebrate “Asian Culture” as a whole?
What on Earth is so attractive about unwarranted self-pity? I’m serious, I can’t imagine why someone would want to believe their lives are so miserable when compared to the entire rest of the world, spanning all of history, they have the best lives ever. Fine by me though, if you choose to be miserable.
I sure hope you didn’t mean to say that every black person who says they’re not a convicted felon is lying. Because that would be a pretty bigoted thing to say, and not at all consistent with the remainder of your post.
I don’t know if this was intended, but the way you phrase makes it sound like the white person disclosed a felony conviction, and the black applicant had a felony conviction, but did not see fit to let his prospective employers know. Maybe some clarification is needed?

I find this a pretty compelling argument. I do not suggest that people consciously teach us these things. But it’s a learned blindness nonetheless. We have no idea, for the most part, just how well-off we are. You may be paid the same wage as your Native American friend, but it hardly puts you on an equal footing. Mind you, it’s a start…
These are just ideas.

Marley23, no White culture my booty! White folks have no culture just like Americans don’t have accents! I’d suggest that the majority of Whities in the US don’t particularly identify with their European ancestors (when they even know who they were) on more than a superficial level, and certainly not more than they identify with their 'merkin brethren & …er… sistren. And as for AN Asian culture–explain to a group of Japanese that they are just like another group of Koreans. Go on! Give it a whirl!
If anything I just poset is erroneous or offensive, blame McDonalds because I wouldn’t have posted it if it weren’t for them.
