Not to Ashley Cole. I think I read that somewhere. Probably the Telegraph online. No doubt they got duff information from The Sun.
Nah it’s Gardiner’s merc - and Pennant hasn’t even called him to explain/apologise.
Anthony is not happy (and is six foot four). I wouldn’t want to be Pennant when he catches up with him!
I think Ed de Goey is probably the tallest Chelsea player ever at 6 ft 6" (rumoured to be even taller than Dennis Wise.)
Celtic don’t really do keepers, unfortunately. One of the older fellas who travels on our bus reckons Ronnie Simpson was the last good keeper we had.
Best Scottish keeper I’ve ever seen, and it really, really hurts to say this, was Andy Goram.
On the subject of shorter keepers, Shay Given is only 6’.
Given’s a decent keeper too - got into my shortlist of top nine in the EPL. Besides Simpson and Goram, the other candidate I was thinking about was Jim Leighton. In his prime. Good enough for Sir Alex (ruadh, do you hate him as much as I think you probably do?), and in some pretty exalted company in that regard: up there with Ricardo, Taibi, Les Sealey and Gary Bailey.
I wonder if Alex Stepney would have got in the Scotland side? That way, England might have progressed a bit further in 1970.
But you’re all forgetting Bob Wilson. He wasn’t THAT bad.
I wasn’t, Wol, but he only played for Scotland once, which, barring some sort of conspiracy theory, means by definition that he must have been crap. And before you cite the '71 Double winning team, bear in mind that in those days Arsenal had five defenders in front of him: McNab, McLintock, Simpson, Rice and Storey. Of course, the fellah that replaced him at Highbury could play a bit. What was the story there?
I have heard the story from Big Pat’s mouth - and THFC do not come out of it well. He does after dinner speaking, which is not really his natural forte.
All I will say is the goalkeeping coach at the Theatre of Lies is Bob Wilson and the GK coaxch at the Lane of (mainly unrequited) Dreams is Big Pat. He has the biggest hands I have ever seen, and bleeds blue and white.
I was reminded last week of legendary Middlesbrough and Republic of Ireland striker Bernie Slaven (he currently does a phone-in show on Century Radio called Three Legends with Malcolm MacDonald and, er, Eric Gates).
How tall is he? I’d guess about 6’ 5".
No, I don’t really give a shite. He hates Rangers anyway
Am I missing something here? Didn’t Sir Alex actually play for Rangers?
Yes, he played for them, but he believes he was mistreated there because his wife is a Catholic. Apparently he discussed this in some detail in his autobiography. He hates them for this.
I’ve read his book and this hasn’t stuck with me - though that may be the combined effect of advancing years and too much Guinness. Are you sure this isn’t an urban legend spread by the bhoys, and embellished on long coach trips?!
It’s confirmed in this Times article:
Thanks for the article. But I don’t think Fergie hates Rangers. After all, he’s a Rangers fan at heart. Love/hate relationship, perhaps.
I don’t mean to give the impression that I care about this more than I do, but what reason do you have for thinking he still holds any affection for them?
I checked his book, and indeed he is scathing of Rangers (in the late 60s / early 70s) on many levels - footballing, political (bickering etc) and religious. Still, as someone who supported the club from the cradle, his feelings must be mixed. Like someone who is divorced - good thoughts, bad thoughts, but not just hatred.
Suppose we’d have to ask him really! And even then he might not answer honestly, or indeed even be able to know his own heart.
Better to wait and ask God!
