Thompson does Britney

Proof that a sucky song can be saved by a true artist.

Last night I saw Richard Thompson in concert. Unlike normal, he didn’t play any of his own material. He just did cover songs. From the last 400 years. In order.

He did songs from Purcell, Gilbert and Sullivan, Nat King Cole, Cole Porter, The Beatles, Prince, and others. He ended with “Oops, I did it again.” In the middle of it he went all baroque with it. Awesome!

Fountains of Wayne did a slow cover of “Baby One More Time” that’s really great, too. I think it was out in 2000.

Thompson does this as part of his "1000 year of pop music" concerts. Yes the first time I heard him do it, I couldn't belive it either.

Of course Richard Thompson is a great live show anyway, saw him at the Byam in Pittsburgh last year.

I’ve heard a few acoustic versions of “Baby, One More Time”. It’s actually not a bad song. Sung slowly, the lyrics take on a sinister, obsessive tone. It’s rather dark, for a pop ditty.
