Thor : the Dark World (spoilers are boxed)

Just come back from seeing this movie. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be any good to be honest. The trailers didn’t do a great job of selling it to me, and I felt the original was fun, but probably weakest of all the non-sequel marvel movies.

I have to say though, it was great. It just felt fun all the way through. Seeing all the characters again felt like meeting old friends, and I’m pleased to say they are given a bit more time to do this time around (nice to see Idris and Rene being more involved).

Loki is on top form as per usual, Thor’s relationship with Jane is handled better than in the first, and Asgard looks fantastic. The action packed last half hour was very funny without ever becoming silly. Overall, everything about it seemed better than the first. I would say this movie was better than IM3 (which I really enjoyed too)

The Cap cameo was really well done, and had the cinema in stitches. I love how Marvel can do a crossover like this as a minor aside. It really fleshes out the universe

I thought the ending was…

great. I loved that scene where Loki has taken the throne while everyone was calling him a hero, and no-one even noticed. It was just so…Loki

There is a mid credits and a post credits scene, so remember to stay for both…

because you get to see the Collector, and hear a conversation about Infinity Gems:)

It was fun.

The movie makes absolutely no sense, but it was fun. And sometimes that is enough. But I will do my very best to never spend a stray thought thinking about it because that will just start the thinking about just how nonsensical it was.

That said, if they were going to force Natalie Portman to be so freaking dull and boring they should have just killed her and found a way to insert Kat Dennings and Chris O’Dowd into the action instead.

A fun movie - though Natalie Portman is far from my favourite actor.
But it brought to mind a thought of what I would like to see in a superhero movie - rather than being a blockbuster war flick, mass battles and splashy special effects, how about they try something in a different genre.
The best parts of the movie, I think, was the interaction between Loki and Thor. Their mom was well done too. How about a caper flick to highlight the first? That’s about what their thing was through large parts of the movie anyway.
Family drama? Full on spy flick? You’ve got some good actors here - let 'em stretch! Deemphasize the big, splashy scenes and bring on more of the moments between individuals.

It’s been done.

You’re right, more superhero movies should try that.

Just saw it; really liked it. Exceeded expectations, in fact.

Well, it’s a movie about a Big Guy with a Big Fracking Hammer–it’s not too likely they’re going to make a Thor movie that doesn’t involve the Big Guy doing Big Things with his BFH. Now, if Agent Romanoff ever gets her own movie, it would make sense to go more in that direction (while still no doubt getting in some kick-ass fight scenes).

Very enjoyable flick with constant eye candy, except for a nude Stellan Skarsgaard. Didn’t need to see that, even pixalated. Tighty whiteys weren’t a good look for him either. The sets, costumes and actors were fun to watch.

As my wife said - if they needed a naked Skarsgaard, why didn’t they get his son Peter?

By which I mean Alexander.

(Idiot)

By which you mean his son Alexander’s peter.

You know, it’s stuff like this that makes me proud to have re-upped my SDMB membership a couple of days ago.

Well played.

Thank you sir. My mind remains in the gutter, where it belongs.

I just got back and I thought it was passable. I think both Thor movies have been weaker than the other recent Marvel movies (except possibly IM3) and I’m not sure why, but this one just seemed to try to cram too much into the movie maybe. Also, I hate it when the main female character is little more than the damsel in distress. (Although Russo and Alexander made up for it somewhat). Anyway, it was mostly mediocre but I did particularly enjoy:

  • Hiddleson’s Loki. He dominates every scene he is in.
  • Idris Elba. I wanted more of him. Renee Russo too.

I have a question about the mid-credits scene: Was that Benicio del Toro?

How did Loki get onto the Asgard Throne?

What happened to Odin?

Saw it last night, loved it. Even in the throes of fangirl lust, I could tell it wasn’t a great movie. Maybe along the lines of IM3, possibly a bit weaker, plotwise.

However, I stand ready and willing to watch either Hiddleston or Hemsworth recite the phone book, so that worked out for me (or better yet, both of them turn it into a dialog together - they have better chemistry as brothers than the two lovers do.)

I was pleased with the discovery of the reason why Loki was all scraggled and unkempt in his cell - I thought that was a lovely touch. I was also impressed with how dense Thor remains regarding Loki: [faux incredulous ] “will you NEVER not fall for that?” [/incredulous ]

Wish there had been a bit more time on Earth than in Asgard, Asian Asgard, and Darkelfland (not even trying to spell that, and too lazy to Google it) because the costumes and “powers” of the other Asgardians make Thor seem more of a first among equals, and less of a fish out of water. He’s more funny when people are making fun of him/drooling in lust over him and he doesn’t realize it.

Also - extremely nice for the girls to get a beefcake scene - was it just me, or did that seem like a direct throw-down to Star Trek’s nekkid Carol Marcus?

I saw it last night and I liked it a lot. The actual plot with the villain wasn’t the greatest, but I’ve seen reviews where it’s getting slammed and I don’t think it’s that bad. Malekith has the dark juju and he wants to plunge the seven realms into darkness with it because he’s evil. That makes sense and it’s a fine goal to have if you’re a dark elf. I thought Eccelston did a fine job as the bad guy and the voice wasn’t as obnoxious as the ads led me to believe.

One of the things I like here and this is something that I think Marvel gets where DC is stumbling is that there’s room for humor. There’s a lot of little stuff here and there and it’s not huge bust a gut stuff or things like that, but there’s room for it and it’s not bringing the movie to a screeching halt when it happens. The bit where Thor walks into the apartment was brilliant, I thought, as well as much of Loki’s stuff.

Loki was great in it and I can see how he’s become the breakout in this. He has a decent arc and he comes just to the brink of redemption but Loki is Loki and that one last step is difficult for him. I did call out a couple things that he did so I feel proud I have that figured out.

Spoilers:

I called that Loki and Thor were faking the backstabbing in the dark realm. I guess it was a little more obvious than I thought and the longer it went, the more obvious it became, but I had that “Oh brilliant, it’s a set up” thought.

I also thought the battle where Thor and Malekith were bouncing between realms was very clever and well executed. Mjlonir flying and trying to get back to Thor was a clever bit of icing on the cake in that scene.

Also, FYI, there are two stingers at the end. One midway through the credits and one at the very end. the very last is not mind blowing, but it’s worth sticking around for.

Thor 3?

Screw that. I want Beta Ray Bill!

I thought it wa Javier Bardem

It was Del Toro, and he’ll be appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy film next year as the Collector.

Watch the spoilers there - people go a little nuts about the credits stingers. We’re still in opening weekend territory for most people.
