I’ve been listening to Keith Jarret’s renowned live album “Live in Köln”. I think it’s fantastic and if you haven’t heard it yet you are in for a threat. At least if you have any interest in instrumental music or modern jazz.
I can’t help but wonder about the little funny sounds in the background. I’ve seen taped live performances with Jarrett and I know that he can get very into his art. But some of the sounds on the opening track aren’t really what you’d expect from a grown man (especially compared to other sounds heard, like whoops and hollerings, that are more obviously Jarrett). It’s more like whimperings and I figured they might be some sort of reverb or something like that, 'cause it’s perfectly in tune with the music.
And then there’s a very solid beat heard for a short while in part 1. Is this Jarrett stomping? Isn’t he busy playing with both legs?
Yes, Jarrett frequently whimpers, groans, and emits strange, nasal crooning noises while playing. He often raises himself up off the stool while playing and leans into the piano, which unfortunately brings his mouth closer to the microphone. He does indeed also seem to stomp while playing–he may be just pumping really hard on the pedal.
My dad used to play Keith Jarrett non-stop on car trips. I’d say, “Dad, what if there was an amazing singer who had the habit of banging out random notes on a piano while singing? You wouldn’t listen to that, would you?” He’d laugh, then turn up the Jarrett.
The one and only time I heard this was on the best stereo I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The amp alone was worth €50,000. It was off an LP too, and the guy who owned the setup refused to play CDs. The entire experience sent shivers up my spine. Anyway, I felt almost as if it had recreated a 3D soundscape - not sure if it was my imagination, but I could sense what angle the keyboard was to me, and where his hands were on it. In addition to his shouty bits, there were also distinct squeaks from the pedals.
This is the reason why I can’t listen to Glenn Gould. Unscripted vocalise with my piano music? No thanks!
Heh, I’ve just thought of the #8,227,391th possible use for duct tape.
