I was watching a movie recently entitled “Gabriel Over the White House” (1933). In this movie, the President, protrayed by Walter Huston, is sitting around with his staff, and their discussing how to assign one of the loyal party hacks.
One person says, “How about make him ambassador to Greece?”
He responds with something like, “That sounds good. He’ll just have to be careful about those funny shorts that Greeks wear in court.”
I presume they meant a kilt, as still worn by the evzones on ceremonial guard duty.
But IIRC that’s a kilt strictly worn as part of a military uniform, not for civilian dress wear as with the Scottish kilt. :dubious: I’m going to presume the character in the movie misspoke with the “court” reference.
