Those naughty spammers.

I received and email today in the account listed on my SD profile.

I get a fair old bit of spam advertising US products and ‘services’ through this account and since this is the only US place where I have any internet presence, I assume someone harvests email addys from SD memeber profiles.

Nothing all that unusual really, but today, having paid my subscription the previous evening or so ago, I got the following email with the title

Cedric Burger Payment past, due acct - reimburse logistic calumny idea

Now apart from the weirdness of the title, I did note mention of a Cedric and since lots of folk may be in the process of subscribing - or not to SD, I would advise anyone to be somewhat careful of the contents of this email as I assume other Dopers will recieve something similar.

I have not opened it, nor will I.

If an admin wants to advise me further about sending this to them them as an attatchment, I would be happy to oblige if it will be useful.

At least these days, some spammers don’t get away with it

Most spam is American, by a massive margin. All email addresses I have get American based spam. Spammers don’t care where and who they spam. Many of the addresses they spam are just random guesses. An American source is certainly not evidence that the spammers harvest from the SD.

What’s the significance of the name Cedric to the SD? Are you perhaps thinking of Cecil??

Spammers frequently now use random words mixed in with common subject titles in order to:

a/ get past spam filters.
b/ get people to open the email

Very wise, but I doubt you find anything worse in it than any other spam.

I doubt the admins want your spam. Delete it.

You know what went through my mind after reading that article?

Holy crap, they DO make millions of dollars from the comfort of their own homes!

Hmmm maybe I need to go sift through my Bulk email folder…

If that email address was harvested through the SD, and that particular spam message was a result of the harvest, then would it not stand to reason that plenty of other Dopers would have received that same message?

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have not. I have never received a spam message to that address. The Dope seems relatively safe to me.

So you already get spam at that email address? How are you differentiating this particular spam from all the others?

Reason I reckon its from SD addy harvester is that I never give my email out to anyone unless I know them, and other accounts I had I shut down or the service has shut down.

My ISP account gets no spam at all, I thought perhaps others from SD might be getting similar, and in this virus infested world I thought it might be worth finding out if anyone else had come across this.

I don’t know if Cedric Burger is your real name, but I got a similar e-mail several days ago with my real name in the title–the rest might have been the same as yours – I don’t remember. After a bit of alarm, wondering how someone got my real name, I sent it to AOL’s spam catcher. I had not paid my subscription to SD yet at that time, though I had contributed a few posts over the last several months or so.
