Those permanent school records...

I was sitting her pondering the wonders of life…well not really but I was thinking back to my school years and wondering what ever happened to those “permanent records” the school kept on you and always held over your head? ie “If you touch Suzy there again it’s going on your permanent record”. So where is this so called “permanent record” and can I get a hold of mine?

In my old hometown, they kept the records on file at the highschool for 7 years. They then had them copied to tape and destroyed the hard copies.

My friend’s mom worked at the school and was able to save our files and give them to us. And they did keep everything they said they would. There were school pictures from each grade, grades from every year, test scores, suspensions, you name it, it was there.

I saw mine once. It had lots of pictures of me as they kept sticking one in as I aged.

It’s a good thing mine had been microfilmed and shipped off. My high school, the last place my permanent record would be, had its main building destroyed in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. They didn’t go in and retrieve the records as the building was unsafe. They just bulldozed it.

I suppose current students at the time just winged it when it came to grades.

Call or write the school. Get a copy. Then you’ll know what’s in it. The contents will probably vary quite a bit from state to state.

They really are permanent. I went to one of the older public schools in the US. I vivdly remember orientation on my first day of high school. The principal pulled out a stack of cards with the records of several students going back 150 years. The message about personal responsibility was quite clear. Recently, I needed my own record, and was able to retrieve (a copy) with a kindly worded letter and an SASE. Reuirements vary from district to district, but at the very least, they have your grades on file somewhere.
