“Perchtoldsdorg Church Castle” is probably the best one, which isn’t saying much.
Qin, it isn’t that it’s Hitler, it’s that he was well, a boring artist. He had no passion, no creativity. Where’s the color, the spirit? They’re lifeless and dull. I can only imagine what my high school art teachers would have said.
If this was a “gotcha!” it failed, since I’ve seen some of his stuff before. Basically, he sucked.
Didn’t vote, as I recognized who the painter was as soon as I saw the pictures. But let’s pretend for a moment that I’m just judging them as they are.
All of them have very much of an amateur “practice painting” look to them. As others have mentioned, the artist doesn’t seem to have much interest in what he’s painting, but made them as part of an assignment. I would say he has a pretty good eye for color, but I have no idea what sort of references he’s working from.
If I ran an art school and saw this portfolio, I probably would have told him: “play around with different styles and subject materials, get tutoring if you can, and try again in a few years”.
It’s completely pedestrian and uninspired. The composition isn’t bad. Overall, I’d put it at the level of the drawings on a house-for-sale flyers. It’s hard to do much with semi-realistic architectural landscapes beyond looking pleasant.
And most history buffs would recognize the artist.
On the other hand, it could be a different angle, and the expected reaction is more “Christ, this sterile crap is what people were talking about when they suggested that Hitler should have stuck to art?”
If only we could have organized a little backfire, along the lines of posters claiming they loved the artwork and, when finding out it was the work of Hitler, declaring that “Maybe he wasn’t that bad a guy after all if he could produce works of beauty like that!”
I didn’t vote because I’ve seen Hitler’s work before and recognized the pictures. I believe there’s a general consensus to which I agree that Hitler was a fairly good postcard painter and that’s pretty much it.
I’d already guessed they were Hitler’s work. I’d seen other stuff done by him and knew that he was rejected by art schools because of a lack of talent. Note to art schools, lower your standards. The life you save could be your own.
Yes I like the paintings-I’ve always liked landscapes and city scenes-regardless of whether its Herr Hitler’s or not. And no this is not a “gotcha” thread.
Asking whether their provenance changes your appreciation of them wouldn’t be a ‘gotcha’. A gotcha would be if the OP tried to argue that people who happened to like the pictures were fascists (and this has not happened)
I liked the clumsier looking works rather than the cleaner looking ones, if that makes sense. Just cause Hitler’s a freakin madman doesn’t mean he didn’t have some talent. What are the plans for these drawings and paintings?
