thoughts on "Scene It"?

Please move to IMHO if necessary; I was debating which forum it should go in but decided to put it in Cafe Society because it’s about a movie game.

I’ve seen a couple of ads for this game and checked out their website: www.sceneit.com . Amazon has a couple of reviews up, but I’m debating getting it for my brother as an Xmas gift and would like to hear other people’s opinions. My main worries are that it might be too young for him (he’s 24 and when I tried some of the sample questions on their site, two were Disney-oriented) and that it might get too repetitive. Any input on this?

I have it, and I love it. It can get repetitive, simply because it occasionally shows the same clips again, but there’s always a different question at the end. I think it works well for any movie lover. It’s not kid-oriented at all, that I’ve seen. The clips I can remember getting were from movies like Young Frankenstein, The Big Lebowski, Some Like It Hot, and Blazing Saddles. The fun part is that often you get so excited about watching the clip that you forget to pay attention, and the question at the end knocks you for a loop.

I’ve played it about five or six times. I like it very much, except for the repetition of scenes. Yes, there are generally different questions, but we have hit on two questions that have been repeated. Given the relatively small number of times I’ve played it, that is kind of disappointing.

However, it is interesting to hear the ones that are being repeated. I’ve never seen any clips from the Big Lebowski, Some Like it Hot, or Blazing Saddles. I have seen one clip from Working Girl almost every single time I’ve played it. I happen to dislike the movie, the scene and Melanie Griffith, so it is kind of excruciating to sit through it. It’s also a bit difficult to sit and watch the scene over and over with my 3 and 9 year old boys, while Melanie talks about having a “head for business and a bod for sin.” Not the worst thing they’ll hear, but not one I necessarily want to reinforce by sheer repetition.

Apart from that clip, we have seen the Young Frankenstein clip several times. I just can’t believe that there is not enough room on the DVD for a greater variety of clips!

That’s funny. I’ve played it several times, and though I’ve only seen the Working Girl clip once, we see the Lebowski one every damn time.

It also looks like they sell some sort of bonus pack to add extra questions and scenes, so I am considering maybe getting both.

I’ve played this game a couple of times, and it is fun. I wouldn’t worry about your brother being too young. If he’s a big movie buff, this game is too easy. But overall, a fun game.

That’s really weird. I think I’ve seen a Big Lebowski clip every single time we’ve played.

It bugs me a bit that so many of the questions are not related to any movie knowledge at all; just observation of what’s happening in the scene. Like they show a dining-room clip from “Say Anything”… Then the question is: how many candles were on the table?

I don’t like it because what you roll on the die matters just as much, if not more to the outcome of the game than answering questions correctly. That said, it’s still fun to go over the trivia and clips in a non competitive fashion.

I played the first edition of the movie version and my friends and I didn’t like it that much. I’ve been told there’s a second edition that’s much better but I haven’t played it yet.

I played the TV version recently and loved it! I knew way more than I thought I would, but I also had a 2-3 year age advantage over everyone else playing.

We got a copy of it as a gift for my mother one year, and have been forced to play it a few times. It’s actually pretty fun. If you like the kind of stuff they have on FilmWise, you’ll probably like the game.

And it doesn’t skew too young; they’re pretty much all over the place. Definitely more popular movies than anything obscure, as you might expect. Still, I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about movies, and I definitely ran into a lot of questions I didn’t know the answer to. I’d recommend it.

Wow! I’ve played the game 5 or 6 times and I’ve never had a Working Girl question and I’ve only had one Big Lebowski question.

My brother gave me the deluxe edition. We’ve played it in party mode, where you just get the questions, for probably two hours, and only got a few repeats. I haven’t tried the bonus disk yet.

I like the variety - there are a lot more things going on here than clips, but I’d also like a higher percentage of older movies, that I’ve actually seen. I’d say get it.

The reason that there are a lot of Disney questions is that there’s an entire version of the game devoted to Disney. We were thinking about getting this for my dad, but decided to ask him about it and buy it the 26th if he’s interested.

I got mine when it first came out. What about 2 years ago? Good game. We haven’t had too many repeats.

We bought the bonus disk too.

They now have a Kid’s version (all about pop culture in general aimed at kid stuff), a Turner Classic Movies version all with classic movies, a Disney version, and a TV version.

I got it for my kids for Christmas. I think it will be one of the gifts that is opened on Christmas Eve so we can play awhile before going to bed!
