Threads or Bluesky?

All the scientists moved en masse to Bluesky over the last 2 weeks.

Third follower. I’m the fellow Doper in the comments of your first post.

And now I have!

Not sure if I got deleted my twitter account or not. Not sure I want to try logging in to find out.

I signed up to Bluesky when my favorite vaccine scientist signed up, but had gotten out of the habit of checking it. I finally downloaded the app to my tablet and phone and reset my password and will probably start checking it a bit more often.

Followed. But I don’t post.

And who might that be (I signed up on bluesky yesterday and am following a couple).

Bluesky will almost certainly break the twenty million user mark tomorrow.

The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL and all of the sports franchises have all made Bluesky accounts and have links to them on the main webpages. Most tv and radio stations and news sites as well. It’s a revolution.

Seems like there hasn’t been such a major paradigm shift in social media since everyone left Myspace for Facebook.

And that happened a lot more gradually.

People did predict something like this; that there was an invisible “trust thermocline” for Twitter where once the userbase collectively crossed it there would by a mass migration to another platform as the same “network effect” that kept them sticking to Twitter would pull them along with each other to the new one. And once that happened it would be very, very difficult to get them to go back just as it was hard to get them to leave.

Interesting to see it actually happen, though.

Czarcasm, you now have 8 followers. I signed up 5 minutes ago as driving-miss-crazy. Now I’ll have to figure out how this new platform works.

I’m putting Bluesky on my phone and I have Threads on my tablet. I’m going to see which one is more suitable to me. I’ve had Threads for a while and it seems to be very much like Quora. Lots of really inane questions and click bait. But I follow a bunch of political cartoonists there and we just got Stephen King.

Thanks for introducing me to this concept. I found an interesting article about it.

For those interested, here is the official Bluesky membership counter. Yesterday they were adding around eight new users per second. At the moment it’s twelve per second. By my calculations, we are around ten hours away from hitting 20M users.

I haven’t tried Threads but I really like Bluesky so far. It gives me a lot of pre-2016 Twitter vibes. Or at least pre-pandemic. I don’t know if it’ll deteriorate like Twitter did, but it will probably fall apart some day in its own way. I don’t understand why platform runners think their way is the only way without seeing the desiccated corpses of all their forerunners scattered about.

Because for every Dupont Network or UPN there’s a ABC/Disney/ESPN. Sometimes their way IS the Right Way. I just wouldn’t wager on it.

Sounds like Bluesky is going to be the way to go. Seems there’s not as much nonsense to weed through. I don’t post much on twitter, mostly just scroll through my follow list. I probably won’t kill my account right away, but soon enough.

Mark Hamill and George Takei are both on Bluesky, so it has nerd cred.

And the author, who coined the term, is on Bluesky.

I just joined Bluesky, but very few of the people I follow are there yet. So unfortunately I need to stick with Twitter for now.

Which reminds me - I should go get the flu vaccine.

When I first signed up they were not, so thanks for that.

John Scalzi was an early adopter, but he didn’t post much at the beginning. I think that’s changed

Just a wee bit. I posted an intro and a link to a food pantry Go Fund Me (also posted here with permission) , linked to a couple of people and gained a few followers.
