I found a Starter Pack of political cartoonists and I’m happy as a pig in swill.
I’m there too, just followed @Czarcasm and all the Dopers that commented on his post (tweet? skeet?)
If everyone who wants to be followed will post their handles, it would be appreciated.
I’m Bluesky @silenusdemigod.
Good idea, I’m frodovorkosigan.
I was never really on Twitter, just there from time to time to watch people tweet about baseball during games. I was done with it even before Elon took over.
But I’m super excited that people are leaving X and going to Bluesky! I remember how hard Google tried to make their thing happen (what was the name of it even??) and it failed miserably. And it seemed like none of the places that made noises about being the place for everyone to go to from X ever caught on.
Even though I don’t participate in that sort of social media (I am on Facebook for hyper-local stuff, and Reddit for all the scrolls) I think it has been important and Musk definitely ruined it. So I am delighted that a critical mass of people and brands have made the decision that yes, Bluesky is it!
I occasionally click on Threads via Facebook, fwiw. It seemed just like pre-Musk Twitter content to me, which is fine but still not my bag. If it doesn’t have people, it doesn’t have people. I’m sure Bluesky is better because it’s getting all the people.
I was never on Twitter (or X) and am not really interested in being on one of these sites, but here is what Paul Krugman had to say in today’s Times:
" Then came this year’s presidential election, which seems to have sparked an exodus (“Xodus”?) from Muskland. From my point of view, Bluesky, in particular — a site that functions a lot like pre-Musk Twitter — quite suddenly has in the sense that most of the people I want to hear from are now posting there."
So agrees with what seems to be the consensus here that Bluesky is the way to go. Krugman also wonders whether X will even survive. He discusses the “network effect”. The more people use it the more valuable it becomes.
Myspace still exists, kinda.
Google Plus. I used it for a while, it was good for amateur creators hoping to find a small audience for their books or art. But it stagnated fast, it just didn’t take any hold with enough people. Google have good ideas, but are really bad at marketing their stuff to the appropriate crowds.
Twitter will likely be around for quite awhile, while growing increasingly toxic and loaded with MAGA rage and conspiracy-mongering.
Musk can afford to run it as a loss leader.
I’m @RobDavSus
Another follow for Czarcasm.
The Starter Packs are a great idea. I’ve already prowled through several to find people to follow and have a bunch of other interests I can search for Starter Packs about.
Oh, and I’m Janicket the So-So there.
My handle is jackmanii27.bsky.social.
Yes, I finally spelled jackmanii correctly.
Signed up even though I don’t really do much social media and I’m just a lurker here. It was fun reading Scalzi’s threads. Followed the dopers on @Czarcasm’s list. I’m mtgeek.bsky.social.
These redundant apps are tiresome.
my handle is gofm
now I have to figure out how to use the app.
It will be my first experience with such things.
at least I think that is my handle. when I check my profile it says invalid handle. Not sure how to resolve this.
I found that this tutorial is helpful Bluesky Feeds
What’s tiresome are posts like this. Why would you even participate in this thread if you’re not interested in the subject? Imagine how shitty the board would be if everyone did this.
Someone (not me) should create a SDMB starter pack. There are probably something like 80,000 starter packs by now.
I quit Twitter after the election. I was very active, with almost 9000 followers (well known account within science circles). I opened a Bluesky account last year but didn’t engage with it much, had a few 10’s of followers. I started engaging in ernest after leaving Twitter.
Within the last 2 weeks I’ve gained almost 4000 Bluesky followers. The site has transformed from what it was even a few months ago. It feels like Twitter from 5 years back.
