Threads or Bluesky?

Heh. Just spotted this on Bluesky randomly right now:

Dr Alex Cruikshanks‬ ‪@alexsaysstuff.bsky.social‬
Social Media must be overthrown and replaced by Social Persia, which will in turn be conquered by Social Macedonia.

Historical puns? that’s a follow.

Eh-They’re old.

I don’t understand why BlueSky is getting all the love in this thread as the alternative to X. According to the article that Puzzlegal posted, Threads has 275 million active monthly users. BlueSky not yet 20M. If BlueSky is approaching some sort of critical mass, surely Threads has surpassed that same threshold.

I didn’t use either, so I am asking from a place of true ignorance. What gives?

As I understand it:

  1. Bluesky, on a daily viewers basis, may be approaching Threads all of a sudden. We’ll have to see whether that remains true.
  2. The value for content creators is, likewise (?), approaching parity very quickly.
  3. Bluesky appeals to a different group for a different purpose, and the sort of person here is probably going to be more interested in Bluesky.

I’d also be curious whether the Threads counts are cheating a bit since Meta forces Threads on you as part of the Instagram browsing experience.

Anyone know how to find/see starter packs on the Android app?

I am on Bluesky now. I never really used Twitter much, and I probably won’t be using Bluesky much either, but the little bit of time I spent on there seemed pleasant. I found a few celebrities to follow and I’m following a couple of sports teams also.

It feels like a less-toxic version of Twitter at the moment.

Right now I am needing Bluesky starter packs for science fiction conventions and bad movies. Help?

I think the quality of the users is the difference, not the quantity. Sure, Stephen King went to Threads, but almost everyone else went to Bluesky.

The best I can find right now is blueskydirectory.com. You can search for starter packs there. I don’t see a way to do it in the app.

That is an immensely helpful link. Thank you!

That’s my guess. I suspect a lot of people have a threads account but never actually use it, because they use Facebook and Instagram and it just sort of happened to them. Whereas people on Bluesky were looking for a twitter alternative.

I believe everything you just posted applies to me.

I probably have a Threads account without even knowing.

ETA: I just tested; technically I guess I do since I can log in with my Instagram account.

Yep, you have to have an Instagram account to join Threads to begin with.

Who runs Bluesky? I do not have anything from Zuckerverse, and that’s a clear warning side for Threads for me.

Bluesky is not run by anyone. It is self sufficient and is running off of funding from investors. The originators are former Twitter employees.

Thank you. That is helpful.

A couple of articles about the X-odus.

More on Bluesky structure; CEO says it is “billionaire-proof” because it relies on open-source structure.

I’m enjoying it, especially the #dogsofbluesky. I followed a bunch of climate scientists using a “starter pack” and that’s interesting. Lots of smart people out there!
