Include me in with the group that loathes these threads. They don’t serve any useful purpose, tie up limited board resources, and are basically circle jerks for their participants.
IMO, there should be a forum just for these so they don’t knock more useful threads into oblivion.
I’ve contributed to a few of the byzantine threads that got closed. And a couple that haven’t since the last time I looked. But wow. I didn’t do it that much. 400 posts in one thread? That’s insane. We all have better things to do. Like take showers and things. I’m gonna do better, I swear. Just let me finish this Haiku…
I think that attacking a thread, or those who posted in it, is about as mature as when in High School, the geeks attack the “cool Kids” because they feel ostracized. I don’t think anyone here on SDMB would intentionally do that, but the attacks to OMFG and the game threads here and on other locations has really been a low in the maturity level.
I was a poster that had seemed to find a nitch in attacking the left wing gay and lesbians in the marrage threads till I found a different voice and a diferent confidence in OMFG. I will miss the thread, but we grow, and evolve. maybe it was a good thing that it got closed, I did seem to focus on it rather than other threads, BUT, I also started a thread because of the peopel I met there.
To end this rather long rant, can we all stop being rude to each other, let the dead dogs lay, and get on with life?
I’m wondering why this never got moved to the Pit what with people calling us mutual masturbaters and circle jerk participators simply for engaging in something that was fun for us.
Those are rude and un called for statements in this forum.
My post wasn’t attacking specific threads. It was against the principle of the thing, namely that these threads take up space, time and resources that are already scarce.
A good analogy would be having a large luncheon in the middle of the main room of a restaurant. Not all of the patrons appreciate having their meals interrupted by raucous conversations and applause. There are banquet facilities that are better suited, where you can be as loud and stay as long as you want without disrupting others.
Just because something is fun for you and a relatively small group of people doesn’t make it fun for others.
That kind of misses the point. It wasn’t meant to make things faster; it was to make the board more enjoyable to more people. Closing down threads that were being used by only a very small part of the membership but were taking up first-page real estate serves the majority.
After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
I agree. I think the only time I became engaged in chat on a thread was when I posted the Veronica Guerin movie thread and only two of us discussed it. And I felt bad about that!
I recently started a thread asking if some people never start threads because I would like more variety from others. That’s just me. Someone else covered a topic or two on the cliques here. Ah. FWIW!
I don’t think anyone has made the claim that closing a few threads would improve performance - there may have been speculations (none of which were made by the staff), but no claims this would be the actual case.
Maybe I should continue to close them until we know for sure. I’m gonna add this one to the sample.
