Threats / Sports / Parents

I am a little afraid to go to practice today. Our coaching staff has had a problem with two parents. The older daughter was dismissed from the team based on her inability to perform. Her skills were not good enough. They have a younger daughter that is on thr freshmen squad.

The older kid was cut on Monday and Tuesday morning the parents showed up cursing, and forced a meeting. The head coach wanted them out of the gym where the other players were. She went into the coaches office and they proceeded to threaten her life, threaten the lives of her children, made comments about the recent shootings at the University of Arizona, insulted and cursed at her. She reported this incident and documented the incident with campus police.

Wednesday morning the dad showed up in my practice. He stood there and wrote on a pad of paper for the entire practice. Wednesday afternoon the mom showed up in the locker room screaming and cursing at one of our players. We had to get the deans to escort her off campus.

Thursday the principal met with the parents. We were told to “close practice”. This means that now there will be a sheet of paper on each door that says “practice closed” til further notice.

Yesterday, my union rep met with the principal and persuaded him to send a certified letter to these parents saying they must not approach any member of the coaching staff and stay away from practice. The principal did not want to do this. He thought this would escalate the situation. So… I am afraid this will be ignored… this letter and the sign on the door. Am I over reacting?

It sounds like the parents think that the dimissal was something more than “* her inability to perform*”.

Sometimes parents can’t see the limitations of their children. Maybe it was the parents wishes for her to play, and her heart just wasn’t really into it.

I know that I would have preferred that my son would have continued with basketball, but he knew his abilities and made the decision not to.

If indeed death threats were made, the police should be informed.
A restraining order may be an option.

Take it seriously, the parents are.
